Tantrums - Breaking the Cycle

Tantrums don't suddenly appear. They are learned. Controlling or eliminating tantrums isn't complicated, but it is hard work. It will be easier if you keep one simple premise in mind: Tantrums aren't personal.

Toddlers and pre-school children don't throw tantrums because they want to be naughty. They don't scream and yell because they want to hurt you. Children throw tantrums because they work. It is your job to make tantrums fail.

"Can I have a lollipop?"

This sentence, when uttered in a crowded supermarket, has the power to invoke a racing heart and sweating palms in many parents.

The answer is no. The child raises her voice. The answer is still no. The child drops to the floor. The answer turns into a discussion and the child's voice increases in volume. The tears flow, the shrieks begin and, after a few parental self-conscious glances at near by shoppers ? the answer becomes yes.

Sound familiar?

What makes the child in the next aisle accept 'no' with a shrug of the shoulders or a nod? Why is your child the one who throws tantrums?

There is no easy answer to this question, but there are some patterns of thinking and practical methods that you can use to break the cycle.

It is a simple, yet powerful fact. A child's behavior can be modified. Rewarding a behavior will increase the occurrence of that behavior. Ignoring it will decrease, and often eliminate the behavior.

A child who throws tantrums receives this message: If I yell loud enough and long enough, I'll get what I want.

The message you want them to receive is: It doesn't matter how long or hard I yell, I'm not going to get what I want.

The tantrums may be just developing. They may have been an unhappy part of family life for months or even years. Whatever the situation, if they're still happening, they're working.

So, how do you start?

* Commit yourself. When you decide to eliminate tantrums from your life, you are not fighting your child. You are in a battle for the good of your child. You will create a more peaceful home environment and closer relationships within your family. You will also teach your child self-discipline. This is a vital skill when dealing with society. Teachers, bosses and most friends will not crumble under the weight of your child's demands.

Tantrums won't disappear immediately. If your child is just beginning to learn the components of a truly inspired tantrum, you may not have far to go. A few unwavering sessions may be all that is needed. If, however, your child has been honing his tantrum technique for months or even years, success may take a little longer. Even so, with consistency and perseverance, it will work.

* Identify the triggers. When do most tantrums occur? Are they sparked by bedtime? Meal times? When shopping? While you are on the phone? Make a list and be aware. Find ways to help your child succeed. If eating dinner is a problem, give her tiny portions. If too much TV is a problem, offer more interesting alternatives.

* Clarify the rules to yourself. Before you enter a tantrum-triggering zone, make sure that your rules are reasonable and consistent. There are no compromises at this stage. If your child refuses to eat dinner but insists on dessert, choose one phrase. "Dinner, then dessert." This way, when the begging starts or questions are fired at you, you can respond with a simple, repetitive, sanity-saving comment. No discussion is necessary.

* Clarify the rules to your child. Before entering a situation that is likely to provoke a tantrum, calmly and firmly explain what is expected of your child. "You may watch this program. When it is over, the TV is turned off. Do you agree?" If a tantrum occurs when the TV is turned off after the program, your phrase can be, "We agreed, no more TV today."

* Stay Calm. Easier said than done. Try to tune out. Try to ignore the unwanted behavior by not responding or responding only with your practiced phrase. A child will eventually realize that she's getting nowhere. She'll turn up the heat. The cries may become screeches and dinner may be thrown across the room (you may want to remove her plate before she gets to this stage). That's OK. She's getting the message. If you do not react, she will realize. Her tantrum isn't working.

* Don't give up. This is imperative. If you usually give in after five minutes and this time, you held out for ten, next time you're in for a longer stint. In your child's mind, the tantrum still worked, she just had to work a little harder. So will you.

* Reward immediately . If you stick with it, eventually your child will see that the tantrums no longer have any effect. As soon as you see the tiniest improvement, offer a reward. This doesn't mean change your rules. If your child screams for only two minutes instead of three and then agrees to turn off the TV, don't reward her with more TV. You will be sending her a mixed message. Reward her with a story, a walk or a hug. "You cried much less today than you did last time. Good for you."

Taming tantrums is challenging and rewarding. Be gentle with yourself. There will be setbacks and days when things seem worse. It can be difficult but it's temporary. When your child's smile begins to shine through the haze of anger and frustration, you will agree. The long-term benefits are worth it.

Baby Jaundice

Around 20% of newborn babies suffer from jaundice. The condition is not normally serious and usually clears up after a week or so.
What Are The Symptoms?
Baby's skin will develop a yellowish tinge and she will look as though she has a suntan. Black babies will have a yellow tinge to the whites of their eyes.
What Causes Baby Jaundice
Babies are born with a high level of the chemical bilirubin in the blood and it may take a week or so for the liver to break this down. Baby will suffer no pain or discomfort as a result of having this condition.
How Is It Diagnosed?
The first sign of jaundice is the change in skin tone. A blood sample will then be taken (usually a small sample from baby's heel) and the levels of bilirubin levels are checked.
What Is The Treatment?
Exposure to sunlight will help break down the chemical. If you are still in hospital, baby will be placed under bright fluorescent lights for set periods; a few days of this treatment is usually sufficient and the yellowish tinge will fade. If you're at home, place baby in as much daylight as possible (without clothing) - but be careful not to expose baby to direct sunlight as she could suffer from sunburn. Breastfeeding will also help (but you were going to breastfeed anyway, right?), and feed on demand so that the chemical clears the system more quickly.
What If The Symptoms Persist?
If the symptoms persist after two weeks, a rare occurence, it can be a sign of other complications and you should consult your doctor.

How To Deal With Toddler Temper Tantrums

It's one of the few things your child can do that will make your cringe. A high-pitched, eardrum shattering, teeth grinding scream that goes on and on and on. Sometimes to the accompaniment of heels beating on the floor, or fists on the wall. You may have to duck as the toys start flying, because your toddler is having a temper tantrum.

The reasons for having temper tantrums, are relatively simple. Remember, at the age of 1-3, when most children will throw tantrums, their world is fairly straightforward, as is their way of ordering it, and putting things in their place.

Children have tantrums because they are tired, frustrated, seeking attention, or possibly because they are coming down with something, or they are trying to gain control over their daily activities.

Naturally, a parent can't always be available when their toddler wants to be picked up, played with, or part of what you are doing. And for the very young, explanations that &quot;Mommy is busy&quot;, just aren't going to be enough. What you can do though, is offer them an alternative, such as &quot;Mommy is busy right now, would you like to draw some pictures for a while?&quot;

It also helps if you learn to avoid fatigue tantrums, by recognizing the signs of a tired child. If you are unable to get them to a nap or a quiet time where they may fall asleep, give them a special toy or game that you keep for occasions when a distraction can come in handy. Chances are, they will fall asleep while looking at it.

The toddler stage is one where children begin to acquire a sense of &quot;self&quot;, and that they are individuals separate from their mother and father. But they still have limited ways of expressing their need to be in control of &quot;me&quot;, so they demand, or nag. When denied whatever it is they seek, their frustration can lead to a tantrum that is either rooted in the inability to get their meaning across, or because they see no reason they shouldn't get what they demand. One way of encouraging good behavior as your child's independence asserts itself, is to involve them in decision making, or independent tasks, like making their bed. Offer them simple choices, such as an apple or an orange, and let them learn that they have the &quot;power&quot; to decide some things. At the same time, you must be firm and consistent about behavior that is not acceptable, such as demanding and throwing tantrums.

When your child throws a tantrum, the best course may be to ignore it, but not to leave the child alone. In their very simple way of thinking, that can be interpreted as abandonment. If the tantrum involves behavior that is harmful, or extremely disruptive (such as in a grocery store), your best course is to take them to a quiet place for a time-out, or to hold them firmly until they have calmed down.

Sometimes the tantrum can be caused by multiple issues of being tired, and the tower of blocks falling over, then Mommy refusing to help build it again. That can lead to a more intense exhibition of temper. The key to successfully managing toddler tantrums, is not to lose your own temper in the process. Remain cool and calm. If you can't, put the child in their time out spot and move out of reach, until the worst of the storm has passed.

Quick Tips for a Successful Baby Shower

Here are guidelines or quick baby shower tips for hosting a successful baby shower party. Come and explore these quick tips. Read more?

In this section we are discussing few quick tips for a successful baby shower. As we have discussed earlier. Baby showers are shifting. From the traditional to the modern fun oriented and realistic baby showers. Depending upon the ease and preference of the mom-to-be as well as the hostess.

There can be a great number of baby shower tips. From planning the baby shower. To inviting the friends to decorating the venue. To serving the baby shower food.

Whatever the case may be. The purpose of throwing the baby shower still remains to celebrate the occasion. While helping the expectant couple by giving them baby shower gifts.

The first concern while planning the baby shower is who should be the hostess? The older traditional rules suggest that close relatives should not host the baby shower. This would look like they are simply expecting presents and gifts. To be more realistic, the modern baby shower. Literally anyone can plan the shower. This would include family members, friends and/or co-workers.

Baby shower tips concerning if the mom-to-be can have more than one shower. Yes, a mom-to-be can have more than one baby shower. However, if there are more than one, the hostess of each would be wise to remember what the previous baby shower theme was. You don't want to have the same baby shower theme at each party. Also, try finding out what baby shower gifts were already given to avoid duplicating the baby shower gifts.

Here are quick baby shower tips for hosting a successful baby shower party:

Send invitations in a timely manner. Around 3-4 weeks in advance to the guests who live near by. For long distance baby shower guests, around 4-6 weeks in advance. Include directions in the invitations, you don't want the baby shower guests to get lost.

Greet all baby shower guests at the door as they arrive. It shows how much you care for them. Provide name tags so that everybody can identify the other guests easily, as they may not all know each other. Introduce the baby shower guests to one another at the beginning of the baby shower party. If you have a seating arrangement, sit people together who know each other or have something in common.

Engage the baby shower guests in some games so that they can enjoy their time and interact with each other. If you have proper space and have a large hall then provide tables for your guests to sit and eat if a meal is planned. Please don't expect them to eat with their plate in their lap.

Instead of placing gifts here and there, it is appreciated to bring the gifts to the mom-to-be as she opens gifts. Don't ask or even expect her to carry anything, especially bulky items (before and after the pregnancy). Because the time of the baby shower is around 1-2 months before or after, she is likely to feel weak during this time. Write down which baby shower guest gave which gift. This will help the mom-to-be when it comes time to send thank you cards.

Be sure to have enough baby shower party favors on hand. A little extra is good just in case! Get the party started on time and keep events moving at a good pace. You would be surprised just how long it can take to eat, open presents, play games, talk and eat cake. Walk guests to the door as they leave and thank them again for coming to the baby shower. Everybody feels special if they are given due attention.

Baby shower tips for the hostess: You should understand that if you are hosting the party then you should show the utmost responsibility and carefulness. A well-planned baby shower would be appreciated by everyone invited. You are not just attending the baby shower party. You are also running and organizing it too. When serving food, serve mom-to-be first and then your baby shower guests. You as the baby shower hostess should serve yourself last.

What Happens When During the Baby Shower?

To be precise, anything can happen anytime as long as everyone enjoys it. There is no right way or wrong way-anything goes well. But the idea should be to make everyone comfortable and make the mom-to-be feel proud and happy at her shower.

Showers are a great tradition to congratulate the new mom and her family, shower her with lots of gifts and blessings. Games are lots of fun and especially good to play if guests do not know each other well. In that case games act as a big icebreaker. Typically, three to five games are played at a baby shower, depending on how much time each baby shower game takes. The winner of each game sometimes is given a small gift from the hostess as a prize.

<B>Basic Tips And Hints:</B>

<ul> <li>Be prepared! Have enough pens, pencils, erasers and paper on hand for any game you decide to play. <li>If it is a couples shower, include the games that men and women both can enjoy. <li>Try to include the party games that mom-to-be can participate in from her cozy chair. <li>Have gifts for the winners such as: scented candles, potpourri, crystal vases, picture frames, address books, day planners, movie passes, plants, coffee mugs, gourmet coffee, hand mirrors, bath soaps, flowers, etc. </ul>

Although the traditional showers were &quot;ladies only&quot; celebrations, these days men are also being included. The baby shower is usually held about 4-6 weeks before or after the birth. Literally there are no specific guidelines to celebrate the baby party, just plan what you think everyone will enjoy.

However, a well planned and an easy-flowing shower can be something like this:

<B>Pre-shower events:</B>

<ul> <li>You should do thorough planning to invite everyone close to the mom-to-be and her family. <li>Send the invitations well ahead of time around 4-6 weeks in advance. <li>If you have a special theme let everyone know on the invitation. <li>To plan a surprise baby shower or not should be decided carefully. </ul>

<B>During the shower activities:</B>

<ul> <li>Upon arrival, greet the shower guests, make them comfortable, put the gifts on the gift table, take their coats, pin on their name tag and offer them a beverage. <li>Provide a gift table near where the mom-to-be will be seated to open them. As guests arrive, ensure their envelope or gift tag is securely attached to their gift before putting it on the table. <li>Introduce them to other guests. <li>When everyone has arrived, start with an icebreaker game to get things started. <li>Now is the time to serve light beverages to everyone. <li>If serving a meal, let the guests know when to help themselves. <li>Provide seating chair and tables to the senior ladies for meal. <li>When the meal is over, serve dessert. <li>While guests are enjoying their desserts, the mom can open her gifts. <li>Play one last game and pass out any gifts for the shower guests to gently bring the shower to a close. </ul>

As these are one-time events for many couples, try to capture every single moment with the help of still photography, videography and voice recording. Give the mother-to-be and the guests something to remember and cherish these special.

Generally at showers light snacks and beverages are served. However, as the hostess, you decide on the food, if it will be catered, etc.

With careful planning your shower will be a fantastically fun and memorable event for the guest of honor and all of the shower guests!

Coping With Colic

A new baby with colic is one of the most difficult problems a new parent has to cope with. Most new parents are under pressure trying to deal with a new routine and lack of sleep, the added burden of a crying infant you seem powerless to help can be overwhelming. The only comfort that can be offered is, with 1 in 5 babies developing colic, many other parents are suffering too and that by the time the baby is four months old the problem normally disappears.

The normal symptoms of colic are continuous loud crying, flexing and extending the legs, clenching fists and often a distended tummy. Very often this occurs in the late afternoon or early evening, although it can happen at any time.

So what is colic and is there a remedy for it? There are many possible causes, but initially the most important thing that a parent must do is establish that the child is actually suffering from colic and there is not another reason for the crying. Colic, however distressed the baby seems, is not life threatening, but it is essential not to assume a crying baby has colic, check with your doctor immediately.

Once colic has been diagnosed you should try to identify the cause. If you are breastfeeding avoid foods that are likely to cause gas. Make a note of what you are eating, baby may be intolerant to something in your diet, including dairy products. If the baby is bottle fed your doctor may suggest a change of formula. Don't overfeed the baby, we all know that bloated feeling when we have overeaten, so why shouldn't baby feel the same. Try hard not to get stressed, I know this isn't easy but many experts believe that babies are sensitive to stress around them and react. It's a catch 22 situation, the more crying the greater the stress. Try to take turns in dealing with the crying baby, even rope in grandparents or a close friend so that you can walk away for 30minutes.

A continuous soothing sound such as a washing machine or tumbledryer often works. There are CD's available that can help and I found that a tape of sea waves worked well, particularly when gently rocking the child.

Seek your doctor's advice on medicines, he may recommend some colic relief. If colic has been diagnosed but there is any change in the baby's behaviour, go straight back to your doctor, it's better to err on the safe side.

Finally remember that it will pass, in a few months that screaming bundle will be toddling about getting into more mischief than you can possibly imagine!

When Not To Begin Potty Training

Potty training can be a stressful experience for you and your child. It's best to start potty training when your child has an established daily routine and is not dealing with any additional stress. Potty training should be the only major change in your child's life.

If your child is showing signs of potty training readiness, ask yourself if any of the following situations exist:

New baby - Although the thought of double diaper duty may be overwhelming, your child needs time to adapt to the new baby before you begin potty training.

Divorce or Separation - Divorce or separation is always stressful for children. Your child may be living in two different homes or under two separate sets of rules. When things calm down, share your potty training plan so that you are both aware of the other person's plan and can work together for the benefit of your child.

New daycare/baby sitter - If your child has recently switched day cares or baby-sitters, wait a couple of weeks/months (depending on how your child adapts) before you start potty training.

New bedroom or bed - Small changes, like a new bedroom or bed, can have a big impact on your child. Wait until your child has adapted to his new bed before you begin potty training.

Information on Purchasing Babys Dresser

Babys dresser or baby chest of drawers make up the best part of the baby's nursery furniture collection. They are simple and make the baby's nursery look really cute. The nursery dressers made of wood should compliment the furniture in the room quite handsomely.

While purchasing baby dressers you need to take care of some basic things. They will definitely help you make the ideal choice:

1. See that the nursery dresser does not have loose pieces of furniture or toxic materials which your baby could chew.

2. Also, though they look decorative and beautiful the designer knobs and handles that go with the wood could be a problem for toddlers who might get themselves hurt. You just have to see that the furniture that you buy is of the right kind and not having any parts that could appear to harm the child.

3. Go for a baby dresser that does not have handles that protrude out. The dressers that have legs that appear to come away from the body of the dresser could at times trip the baby.

4. Go for a baby chest of drawers that could be made of plastic (non toxic ones) or any other safe material.

You can definitely design your nursery by putting in an adequate amount of style and light. Keep an overhead light in a baby's room. A table lamp will also illuminate the nursery brightly and adequately. Just take care that the cord and see that the lamp is out of the reach of the baby. Choose what kind of light is tolerable and suited to the child without straining its eyes.

Nursery lighting is something which will beautify your nursery dressers, but you shouldn't use halogen lights. If they are kept upright, there is a chance of them getting toppled or knocked over, which is not good for the child. Again it is a subjective opinion but consider your baby's safety as important.

I had gone to my friend Nancy's home where she had just bought a baby dresser that was nothing short of incredible. The baby was smiling sweetly and looked in high spirits. It was as if the baby wanted to be in the nursery dressers. It was as if it was telling me, &quot;Would you like to be as comfy as me?&quot;

Nancy's baby dressers are made of plastic with a wooden finish or coating. It compliments well with the furniture in Nancy's room. The light for the nursery is dim, just about the correct range falling over the baby's crib without looking overtly gaudy. She has made a great choice regarding the baby's chest of drawers and baby dressers.

Child Safety in the Home

In the 15-year period from 1982 to 1996, the leading cause of death among young children was accidents, poisoning and violence (external causes) -- these accounted for about 46% of all deaths among Australian children.

Although the death rate from external causes declined, it remained the leading cause of child death during this period. About a third of all child deaths from external causes were due to motor vehicle accidents (on average around 64 deaths per year) and drowning (on average 68 deaths per year).

A number of these deaths were also due to a silent killer found in many thousands of homes -- dangling cords.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission in the US has been working with manufacturers of window blinds and shades to reduce strangulation deaths which occur when young children get caught in the loops of window covering control cords.

Since 1981, over 170 children have died in the US as a result of being entangled in window cords. This is about one death per month. In about half of these cases, children between eight months and four years old were found hanging in the loop of the cords. In other cases, children were found with control cords wrapped around their necks.

The younger children who died, usually between 8 and 23 months old, were in cots that were placed near the window cords. The older children, usually between 2-1/2 and 4 years old, strangled in cords when they climbed on furniture to look out windows.

Blind manufacturers have introduced wand controls on vertical blinds to eliminate this unnecessary risk to children.

MORE SAFETY TIPS

If it's not possible to replace existing curtains or blinds with wand-controlled verticals, there are temporary steps that can be taken to prevent accidental deaths from strangulation:

* Keep all cords out of reach of children
* Move cots and furniture away from cords
* Remove objects from below windows to prevent children from climbing
* Do not tie cords together

The safest, long-term solution is to use wand controls. And of course, you must always be watching your children.

Breast Feeding Basics For Your Newborn Baby

It is a myth that bottle-feeds and breast-feeding is equally good. Mother's milk is the best for proper growth of the child. There are certain nutrients in the mother's milk that helps the baby fight illnesses while also promoting brain development. As compared to breast fed babies, the formula-fed babies are more prone to illnesses.

Ideally you should start breast feeding the child within 2 hours of its birth, but do not worry if for some reason you are not able to do so - many mothers feed their children after a few days because of some medical reasons and they turn out to be just fine. Apart from milk avoid giving the child any water or pacifier because the child is still learning to breast-feed and things like the bottle nipple and pacifiers can confuse the baby while nursing because milk doesn't flow as fast as it does through bottles.

Do give the child enough time to breast-feed. Don't limit the time. It could frustrate the baby. An average of about 10 to 45 minutes can be taken by the baby to completely satisfy itself.

So how should you hold your baby during breast feeding? The answer to this is that see to it that the gums of the baby are on top of the areola because there is a chance of nipples becoming sore if the baby just chews on the nipple instead of taking in the areola. You can hold the baby in a cuddling position and feed it or you can lie on your side placing your baby facing you. Usually when the baby has had enough milk it will let go of the nipple on its own, but the baby takes usually half an hour on each side.

We'll now move on to another critical issue which every breast-feeding mother needs to know about ? what to eat during the process of breast feeding. It is very important for a breastfeeding mother to have a healthy and balanced diet. A variety of foods are required during this period including:

? Get lots of vegetables and fruits ? try and have an intake of 5 portions a day of fruit and veg.

? For additional energy try and take in starch rich foods such as bread, pasta, potatoes, pulses and rice ? this will provide a good source of energy.

? Foods such as wholemeal bread, vegetables, pulses, cereals and pastas will provide fibre ? women occasionally experience bowel problems after childbirth and an intake of fibre on a daily basis will help with this.

? Proteins such as lean meat, fish, eggs and poultry.

? Try and get two portions of fish per week (including some oily fish). Do not exceed 2 portions of oily fish per week.

? Dairies such as cheese, milk and yoghurt are an excellent source of calcium and should be included in a breast feeding mother's diet.

? Some doctors advise taking vitamin supplements such as Vitamin D (10 mcg per day). Your doctor will be able to advise which supplements will be right for you.

In addition to the foods that you should eat above there are certain food types that you should steer clear of at this time. As above you should restrict your intake of oily fish to two portions per week but you should also avoid eating more than one portion of swordfish, marlin or shark per week as these fish contain high levels of mercury. You should also be careful with your intake of caffeine and alcohol. It is true that some breast feeding babies react to the foods that their mother has consumed. Some doctors believe that it is wise to lay off peanuts during this stage as well ? approximately 2% of the population is allergic to peanuts ? however your baby may have a higher chance of being allergic if the mother/father/brothers/sisters have problems such as asthma, eczema or hayfever. If you believe your baby may be at risk due to these factors it is worth consulting your doctor.

Tips For a First-Time Mom

Having a baby can be one the most life-changing experiences there are. And not all those changes will be easy to cope with. Here are some tips for a first-time Mom, to help you get through the rougher times.

The vast majority of women today, are working when they become pregnant. That means making a decision whether to stay home with the baby, or return to work. This is something you can consider during your pregnancy, weighing the pros and cons of your income, versus the benefits to this child, and any others to come in the future. If you decide to return to work, finding childcare ahead of time, will relieve you of the worries when your maternity leave is at an end.

Women who do work full-time, often find themselves swamped in things that relate to the baby, whether it's their laundry, their nap schedules, or their feedings. At times it can seem like your whole life revolves around them, where it used to involve co-workers, friends and visits to family.

One of the most valuable tips for a first-time Mom, is that you shouldn't give up your entire life to the new one that you're carrying. After the baby is born, you will be their primary caregiver, but you don't need to be tied to them every second. Make some time for you, whether it's a yoga class at night with Dad doing the babysitting, or a date out with your partner, and one of the grandparents spoiling the new arrival.

It's important that you have a break from the constant focus of your everyday activities with the baby. This can include many at-home activities as well, like reading, quilting, or even crafts that you enjoyed before the birth. The baby will be just as happy watching you relaxed and involved in your hobby, as they would be if you were doing the laundry.

You might even find a group for mothers at your church or local community center. Sharing tips for a first-time Mom with others, is one way of easing the pressures and worry of whether you are doing things right, and the time out, even with baby, will be a change in routine that you'll welcome!

The Personality Traits Of A Taurus Baby

Your Taurus Baby..

April 20 - May 20

Taurus babies are usually quiet and calm. They are pleasant characters, sometimes a little shy, and they dislike being the centre of attention but respond well to affection, showing a great deal of affection in return. Although outbursts are rare, a Taurus baby dislikes being opposed and can be stubborn about getting her own way. A young Taurus will work steadily at a task.

When raising a Taurus it is best not to try to force your child to do something. The danger is that your child will turn stubborn and Taureans can hold their ground for a long time. It is best to avoid harsh commands, instead loving hugs will melt any resistance.

Young Taureans can charm all adults, especially those of the opposite sex. Shows of physical affection toward your child are essential, but take care not to smoother her. Taurus children are sensitive to their surroundings and they will thrive in harmonious settings of both colour and sound. Soft sounds and shades of pink and blue will be calming to your baby.

Both music and art will interest a Taurus child so you should encourage listening to melodious music, drawing and colouring. Once a Taurus has learnt something it will not be forgotten. It is important to encourage a Taurus child to express themselves through words, music or art because there will be a tendency to hide true feelings.

White Noise and 10 other Soothing Sounds for Calming a Colicky Infant

The crying ? oh, the crying. A colicky baby can really drive you to the edge. Failed attempts to soothe her crying may leave you wondering if you are cut out to be a parent after all. But, don't worry, you are. You just need to arm yourself with some tools to battle each colic-crying outburst.

But, first, let's define why your colic baby cries.

The most popular theory from scientists lately is an underdeveloped and immature nervous system. I know all women who have given birth can attest to the fact that a baby has a big head. Right?

Wrong. Actually, a baby's head isn't big enough to house a brain that is mature enough to have all the survival tools a human infant needs. Their brain is only the size of an apple. The birth canal cannot handle a bigger head (thank God). So, when a baby is born, the only inherent survival skills are sneezing, sucking, swallowing and?.CRYING!

Most babies (80%, that is) are capable of crying for a reason, and then calming themselves down. These are usually what I call &quot;the good sleepers&quot; or &quot;easy babies&quot;. They are awake for awhile to learn and accept stimuli. Then they sleep to recover and awake to take in more stimuli.

Unfortunately, a colicky baby is usually NOT a &quot;good sleeper&quot; or an &quot;easy baby&quot;. They are high-maintenance. Their nervous system is overloaded with all the sights and sounds of a new world. And by about dinner time, they've had it. The crying begins. Once they start crying, they lack the mechanism to calm themselves down. In my experience, most mothers with colicky infants tell the same story. Their baby fights going to sleep. They won't take a nap. They won't stay asleep once they do finally go to sleep. These poor babies never take the time to recover from all the stimuli they have taken in over the course of a day.

So this is where you, as a parent, step in. Reduce the environmental stimuli and recreate the feeling your baby had while in the womb.

Remember, in the womb, your baby was packed in tightly. It was dark. It was warm. And the prominent sound she heard was the &quot;whoosh&quot; of blood flowing through the placenta. This &quot;whoosh&quot; is a little louder than the noise of a vacuum cleaner running.

However, there are other items you might have around the house that can lull your over stimulated colic baby to sleep. Most babies can be soothed by rhythmic, monotonous, low-pitched, humming sound that repeats at 60-70 pulses per minute. Here are 10 such items for you to try:

1.A shower running
2.A fan
3.A running dishwasher
4.A running washing machine
5.A very loud, ticking clock
6.A bathroom fan turned on with the light off
7.A metronome set a 60 beats per minute
8.A radio tuned to static
9.A tv tuned to static
10.Smooth jazz or easy listening stations

While listening to these rhythmic sounds, it is best to lower the lights, and make your baby comfortable. Remember, we are trying to recreate the feeling of being in the womb.

Finally, it is true what you read. Baby colic does eventually come to an end. As your baby grows, and their brains increase in size, all of the circuits mature and they learn the survival tools necessary to cope. It only takes about three to six months. In the meantime, when you feel a crying outburst about to happen, turn off the lights?and turn on all your household appliances.

Just kidding!

Baby Safety & the Family Dog

I recall how wonderful the baby swing in particular, was for moments of peace and quiet as well as much needed arm rest. A recent article (http://www.cnn.com/2005/HEALTH/parenting/02/23/baby.swings.dogs.ap/index.html) addresses valid concerns about dogs and mechanical swings. It is important to keep in mind that all dogs react differently and supervision is a must all the time!

I have seen first hand a variety of reactions to baby equipment by different dogs. Some dogs become desperate to chase and catch the moving swing while others seem to find it soothing. A human moving in the air is not normal to dogs and can be quite confusing even though the swing is grounded. It is important to know your dog's reaction to different situations and stimuli. Here are some things to take into consideration:

1. Does your dog love to chase ANYTHING and everything?

2. Is your dog reactive to sudden motion?

3. Does he startle easily?

4. Is your dog sensitive to noise? If so, loud, soft or sudden? High or low pitch?

Adults in charge of supervising a baby must never allow the dog to remain in the room alone with a baby for even a second! This is a consistent key factor in most reports of attacks with newborns and dogs. This point must not be taken lightly. If the adult is not there for the dog to defer to and the baby makes noises the dog may be the first to respond and possibly tend to the baby. This is very dangerous as dogs communicate and relate very differently then we do as humans. What can caretakers and parents do to prevent such incidents?

It is best to introduce baby swings and all baby equipment to the family dog prior to the arrival of the baby. Baby swings have all sorts of gadgets these days! They vibrate, make music and even rotate. It is important to know your dog's individual sensitivities and prepare him well ahead of time. Some points to consider with baby swings:

1. Once in motion some dogs find the natural desire to chase hard to control around baby swings.

2. The noise of a vibration device in the swing can have an irritating humming noise for some dogs.

3. Spinning objects that are meant to be visually stimulating to an infant may be enticing to a dog to catch.

4. Noises of the music may be irritating to some dogs' sensitive ears.

It is important that family dogs learn how to behave calmly around all baby equipment prior to its use with an infant. Practice before your baby is home with a doll in the swing. Some dolls make noises and blink eyes etc. It sounds silly but it does help you role play and visualize the real situation. This allows a time for your dog to safely explore as you teach him how you want him to behave. Reward positive and appropriate behavior. Make this a positive experience. Ignore unwanted behavior and teach desired behavior. You do not want the first time your dog sees this new equipment to be when you REALLY are hoping the baby will go to sleep! Many dogs learn that the swing is just part of the new furniture and ignore it. This is ideal but still does not mean that it is safe to leave the room when a real infant is resting in the swing. Refreshing and practicing obedience now goes a long way towards a smoother transition once baby arrives.

Have a plan for the situations such as the phone ringing. Here are some ideas.

1. Close the door to where the baby is.

2. Take dog with you.

3. Put a leash on your dog in the house to keep him near by or to use as a tether to furniture to safely secure him.

4. Use a baby gate that you must physically lock in place to gate off area when the baby is. (Not for those that like the high jump!)

5. Offer your dog some great outdoor activity in a secured area. As always it is NEVER safe to leave a baby and dog unsupervised for any reason at any time.

Most of all ENJOY YOUR BABY!

Childrens Backpack Safety and Comfort

One of the easiest and safest ways to carry your child around is via an infant carrier or baby backpack. Of course, if you plan to take advantage of a backpack it is vital that you follow some key safety tips and recommendations. You can't simply toss your baby behind you and hope for the best, now can you? Aside from this, it is also important that you and your baby are comfortable while riding around in a backpack. There are several strategies you can adopt and features you can search for to ensure your baby and you enjoy a comfortable ride. Let's talk more about each of these below.

Baby Safety Tips So what exactly do you need to do to make sure your baby or child remains safe while backpacking away? Here are some important considerations:

<ul>1. Always follow the manufacturers directions when placing your baby in a pack or carrier.</ul> <ul>2. Never exceed the recommended weight limits.</ul> <ul>3. Always fasten all loops and buckles.</ul> <ul>4. Protect your child by putting adequate sunscreen protection on them while traveling. They are even more likely to expose their tender flesh to the sun while riding high. Studies suggest that most of skin cancer results from damage done from the sun in the first few years of life. Sun protection should include a wide brim hat. Alternatively, you can select a back pack with a built in sun or rain canopy.</ul> <ul>5. If backpacking far from home with your children, be sure to carry extra water, a first aid kit and a cell phone so you can contact someone in an emergency.</ul> <ul>6. Always wear your baby less than 6 months old in a front pack or carrier.</ul> <ul>7. Take care when releasing your baby you do so slowly and carefully so they don't slip out of the pack or carrier.</ul> <ul>8. Never use your pack once it starts showing signs of excessive wear or tear. </ul> <ul>9. Buy a pack that is well suited for your activities. Some backpacks are more suited for intense hiking while others are perfect for short trips to the grocery store. While you might use a heavy duty pack to haul your child to the grocery store, you should never use a light day pack to take your child on serious hiking trips. </ul> <ul>10. Bring along formulations for insect bites and stings if you plan on packing through the woods with your children. </ul>

Comfort Tips Wearing your baby can be one of the best experiences you ever enjoy if you do so wisely. One of the key ingredients for successfully wearing your baby is comfort. Your comfort is just as important as your baby's comfort. To promote your comfort:

<ul> <li>Make sure straps are evenly adjusted to prevent pack from hanging to heavily on one side or the other.</li> <li>Look for a pack with a well padded back and chest pad</li> <li>Consider a pack with a hip or waist belt to help distribute your child's weight more evenly.</li> </ul>

To improve your child's comfort, look for a pack with padded harnesses if you plan on traveling long distances with your child. Likewise, a rain or sun shield may provide tremendous relief from the elements. You may even consider a pack with built in toy loops or other accessories that will help entertain your child during long jaunts. Most children however, find the ride itself as much an adventure as any toy or other device you may bring for them. Don't forget to bring along some extra water or juice for you and your child if you intend on running errands or hiking for long periods of time. Just as with a stroller ride, you can expect at some point your child will probably get thirsty or want a drink of water. Fortunately many packs come equipped with handy storage pockets or attachments that allow you to bring all the snacks and beverages you need for a mini day trip!

Last but not least, don't forget that everyone is different. Some parents will prefer a convertible back pack (one that converts from a front to back pack or pack to stroller). Others will prefer a sling, some will want a heavy duty pack and others will want one with minimal accessories. Keep in mind your own personal preferences and needs before searching for a pack. That way you are bound to find one that is comfortable and fun!

What to Do if the Baby Shower Guests Dont Know Each Other

A baby shower is a simple celebration of family and friends to celebrate the upcoming birth of a new baby. It is a great tradition around the world in many religions and ethnicities.

With a little bit of difference from place to place the basic motto remains the same. To shower the new mom-to-be with flowers and gifts.

Anyone can plan the baby shower. Traditionally baby shower guests consisted mostly of close friends and family members. But these days anyone can be invited as a baby shower guests, such as co-workers, friends, friends of friend, relatives and church groups etc.

Generally there are no specific guidelines or rules for baby showers. Anything is fine as long as everyone is having a good time.

When the baby shower guests arrive, usually they gather in a hall or big room. The mom-to-be will be sitting along a few close friends. Upon arrival of the baby shower guests, everyone should be offered some beverages and/or light snacks.

Most of the time the baby shower guests know each other. But in case they don't, it is up to the hostess to introduce the guests to each other.

Handwritten or computer generated name tags or slips can be made and attached to everyone with the help of straight/safety pins. Or, the baby shower hostess can hot glue some dried flowers, mini rattles, baby bottles, ribbons etc. to use as name tags.

With a few well chosen baby shower games, you can help your guests have fun. While at the same time they get to know each other. The baby shower games act as an ice-breaker between the baby shower guests.

Provide some munchables like chocolates, candies, cakes, etc. This will get the baby shower guests to move around, and make small talk with each other. Giving them a chance to meet the other guests, and making new friends.

Speaking of baby shower games. There are a large number of baby shower games to choose from. You could go for the a simple game such as, Who Am I? In this baby shower game, guests get to play detective. As guests arrive at your party, pin on their backs the name of a famous Mother. Then they have to ask other guests "yes" or "no" questions that will help them figure out who they are. For example, "Am I a real Mom?"; "Am I still alive?".

Bonding with Baby

Most parents bond instantly with their babies, an intense feeling that makes you want to hold and love and protect them. For some parents, this can take a little longer, especially if there has been a difficult pregnancy or labour.

Research indicates that babies who develop fulfilling relationships with their parents tend to grow into secure, well-adjusted adults and even perform better at school.

Bonding is a natural process but there are many ways to help out, especially if you provide focused, responsive care in a nurturing environment.

Breastfeeding - a breastfed baby will receive regular close contact with its mother, helping an early bond to develop. Unfortunately, this is not always easy, so speak to your health visitor if you need any help or assistance.

Touch - a baby's first communication is via touch, so hold your baby close, cradle her in your arms or use a sling if you need to get on with chores.

Massage - a more structured method of touching your baby and a way of promoting physical and mental growth as well as the parent/baby bond.

Singing - no matter how tone deaf you may think you are, your baby will love to hear your voice. The rhythmic nature of nursery rhymes is very soothing and is believed to help with language development.

Talk - although she may not understand what you are saying, your baby will love to hear you chatting away about what you are doing, whether it is changing her nappy, peeling the potatoes or folding the washing. She will gain confidence from the fact that you are always near and always focused upon her, even if the household chores need to be done.

Pull a face - even very young babies are fascinated by facial expressions.

Regular activities - such as nappy changing time, are a wonderful time to show your baby just how much you love them. Talk to her, kiss her tummy, tell how what lovely dimples she has, how much you love her smile. This will take your mind off what a messy job it is and show that you love her, no matter what.

Slow down - life is getting faster and faster but slow and steady is best for baby. Stop and spend time with your baby, relax and enjoy yourself, your baby will love you no matter what.

Arabella Greatorex is the owner of <a target="_new" href="http://www.naturalnursery.co.uk">http://www.naturalnursery.co.uk</a>, an online store selling organic and fairly traded products for families including organic clothing and nappies, fairly traded toys and natural toiletries.

Baby Shower Invitation Wording

Your baby shower invitation wording can be either generic or specific. If you know the gender of the baby, then you should try to create gender specific wording for the baby shower invitation. There are wonderful little sayings for baby boys, as well as wonderful sayings for baby girls. But if the gender's not yet known, don't worry. There are many standard wording options as well.

You will find ideas online for twins, triplets, and even adoption baby shower invitation wording. You can search for ideas in many places, but the best place to look for anything in our world today is the Internet. Many invitation websites have what's called 'Wording Libraries' where they offer hundreds of wording options for you. Your baby shower invitation wording could be in the form of a quote or baby poem. Wording for invitations can be casual or formal depending on the overall style and theme of the event. Just be sure to be consistent. People will assume that casual wording means it's going to be a casual event!

Your baby shower invitation wording needs to contain some important information, like the time, date, location, and the names of the guests of honor! Don't forget to include where the mother or mother to be is registered for gifts. And perhaps you're throwing a surprise baby shower ? what fun! Just be sure to tell your guests to keep it quiet in the baby shower invitation wording. Here is a sample wording for baby shower invitations when you want to keep the big event a surprise:

Shhh! It's a Secret!<BR> A Surprise Baby Shower for<BR> Anne Marie Glenn<BR> and newborn Joe Steven

Date:<BR> Time: <BR> Place: <BR> RSVP:<BR> Registered at:

Here is a sample wording when the invitation is for an adopted baby:

Let's rejoice with the Thompsons<BR> as they welcome

Lily May

to their family.

Date:<BR> Time:<BR> Place:<BR> RSVP:<BR> Registered at:

Whatever you decide to say on your baby shower invitation, be sure to proofread your baby shower invitation wording and spelling to make sure that all of the information is correct. It would be a shame to order and pay for so many baby shower invitations, only to find printing mistakes and have the shipping delayed because of waiting for reprints. Taking time to proofread in advance is always a wise idea.

And if you're not sure what to say, or if you're not sure if the information is clear or if you wonder if it sounds all right, then don't hesitate to get a second opinion. Family and friends can help you, and many vendors will have customer service representatives standing by ready to assist with wording for invitations.

While you're ordering or creating the wording for your baby invitation, don't forget to consider the wording of your thank you notes! Often these are ordered at the same time and made to match the invitations. Again, your wording can include poems quotes, etc. and you will want to keep the same style, color, or theme. Hopefully, you know the mother well enough to know what her preferences are.

And if you're not trying to keep the baby shower event a surprise, then go ahead and ask her or her close family members about her opinions about the baby shower invitation wording. She may appreciate being a part of the decision making process, or she may be just as happy to have someone else make some decisions for her, so her mind can be on other important things, like preparing for the new baby's arrival!

How Can I Teach My Toddler to Share?

Helping your child move from breast breast milk or formula to solids is a milestone for both you and your baby. However, it can be challenging for some parents. Here are some tips and tricks I've compiled for introducing solid foods to your baby. Do remember, however, that you should follow your pediatrician's advice if you're in doubt.

Start with fruits One tip I've heard from various is to start with fruits. Use really ripe bananas, mashed with a fork. Or sweet potatoes (baked, with the insides scooped out).

Use a baby food grinder You can try small bits of real rice, mixed with meats (without seasonings). The meat should be meshed with baby food grinder (you can find these pretty cheap).

Don't feed your baby directly from the jar This is an interesting tip I've heard from experienced mothers. Feeding your baby directly from the jar is not a good idea. Their saliva can mix with the food and make it taste bad. Put the food in a mug rather than a bowl so that you can feed baby more easily.

Keep away the sweet tooth Try not to give baby sweet stuff at this stage. Deliberately give them vegetables before fruits to keep away that sweet tooth.

Wait for the first tooth It is a good idea to wait until your baby gets his / her first tooth before even thinking of starting solids. One baby (I heard) got his first tooth at 5 months and began showing interest in what his father was eating shortly thereafter. At about 6 months, he was reaching for his parents' food.

Starting your baby on solids need not be a difficult task. Hopefully the above tips will help you somewhat when that time arrives for your baby.

Wooden High Chairs Offer Simplicity, Beauty, and Practicality for Todays Busy Families

Wooden high chairs with their looks and functionality make a great addition to any kitchen or dining room, no more plastic, teddy bears or bright colors, so no more hiding your high chair.

Wooden High Chairs are simple and elegant and a welcome addition to your home, with designs ranging from contemporary to country and finishes like cherry, oak, natural wood and maple, you are bound to find the wooden high chair that will complement your home as well as your budget.

Some manufacturers such as Eddie Bauer, are realizing that not only is durability important to parents, but comfort for their baby is a top priority as well and are beginning to add seat cushions to their wooden high chairs, making them more comfortable for your little one.

One drawback to using a wooden high chair is they do not recline, so therefore are not great for infants that can not sit up unassisted, however once your baby is sitting up on his or her own, usually around 4-5 months old, these are wonderful. Facts You Should Know About Baby Shower Etiquette

Whether you're hosting a baby shower for the first time or not, chances are you've got some questions regarding the right baby shower etiquette. You want to create a truly special time for the guest of honor without any unintended faux pas. This guide was specially created to help you do exactly that.
The real basics
<ul> <li>Take the wishes of the mom-to-be into account at every stage. That includes the games, food, invitation list and all other aspects of the baby shower. </li>

<li>You can have baby showers either before or after the baby is born. Generally, they're held 1 or 2 months before due date. But they're also held after baby arrives because of medical or other reasons. </li>

<li>These days, it is perfectly ok for a close relative or even the couple themselves to host a shower. Those "rules" about only non-relatives hosting a baby shower are quite dated now. </li>

<li>Before deciding on the kind of baby shower you plan to have -- girls-only or coed, theme or no theme and so on -- consult mom-to-be and find out what she prefers. </li>

<li>Who can be invited? Generally, anyone the mom-to-be feels she should call. She's the best guide here. </li>

<li>Do you always need to send written baby shower invitations? It is usually the better choice. With a written invitation, guests have all details at their fingertips and need not rely on memory. Plus, you can (and usually should) include directions on how to get there. </li>

<li>At the same time, it is fine to just inform people on the phone. Do tell them well in advance, though. So they have enough time to buy gifts, arrange for a baby sitter, etc. And leave your contact numbers with them so they can reach you easily if they need any clarifications. </li>

<li>Can you hold a surprise shower? Sure. It can be a wonderful feeling for the expectant mother. But do consult someone close to her (mother, sister, etc) to know about her likely preferences in all areas. </li> </ul>
The devil is in the details
Here's additional information on baby shower etiquette that'll help you host a truly great party.
<ul> <li>Send out shower invitations at least 3 to 4 weeks in advance. Send them even earlier for out-of-town guests. Request an RSVP by a date 2 weeks before the baby shower. </li>

<li>If you're having a coed shower, you might turn the guys off if you send frilly baby pink invites full of baby talk. Stick to attractive, stylish invitations. </li>

<li>If you're planning a formal baby shower, avoid totally goofy games. At coed parties (or even at all-girl events), be wary of playing shower games that focus on expectant mom's tummy -- she may not be comfortable with them. Check with her about choices of games and ice-breaker activities. </li>

<li>Greet all guests at the door as they walk in, provide them with name tags (if there are many guests) and introduce them to others to get conversations going. </li>

<li>Lots of women have very different food preferences when they're pregnant as opposed to at other times. So do check with the guest of honor while finalizing the menu -- yes, every single item! She may have some ideas of her own about what baby shower food she prefers. Avoid foods are not recommended during pregnancy. </li>

<li>It's a real hassle for guests to eat a meal balancing their plate on their lap. Good shower etiquette demands that you provide sufficient tables so everyone can enjoy their meals. That way they don't have to worry about whether they're about to spill food on the floor! </li>

<li>Don't skimp on quantities of food. Sometimes a lot more may get consumed than you had bargained for! Same holds for baby shower favors, drinks, ice, etc -- having a little extra buys you peace of mind. </li>

<li>Register for gifts at only one place. Even if there are reasons like another store being closer to some guests. Else mom-to-be may end up with duplicate gifts she may have to return. And guests will be disappointed if they find that someone else has chosen the same gift they have. </li>

<li>While giving gift suggestions, include items at a variety of price points, not just high-ticket items. And do suggest that guests can get together to purchase higher priced items. </li>

<li>If there are older siblings, make sure they receive a gift each. They may already be feeling somewhat left out with a new baby on the way, so this is a great idea. </li>

<li>Irrespective of whether it's a coed baby shower or not, buy a gift specially for dad. He should feel that he was remembered too. </li>

<li>Record who gave each gift. Essential information when the time comes to send thank you cards! Sending thank you cards is essential baby shower etiquette. </li>

<li>Hand gifts to mom-to-be for her to open and take it from her once she's done with it. This will save her the hassle of continually getting up and moving about to pick up gifts. </li>

<li>Sometimes, some guests may need to leave early. They'll appreciate it if mom-to-be will open presents while everyone is eating. </li>

<li>Start the baby shower on time and keep it fairly short. Don't get bogged down in any one segment like games. Be sensitive to mom-to-be's energy level and any signs of fatigue she may show. End the party if she's beginning to feel run down. Walk guests to the door as they leave and be sure to thank them for coming. </li>

<li>Don't expect perfection. No party ever is perfect. There's always the unforeseen -- power goes off just as gifts are being opened, you forgot to dust one corner of the room, the pack of baby shower favors you opened just before the party turns out to be a different color than you ordered and so on. You can't control it all. </li> </ul>
Special situations
You might have a friend or relative who just lost a baby, or is infertile despite all treatments. Should you call her for your baby shower? Attending may be a challenge for her. Being confronted with another's pregnancy may be difficult for her to bear.
The rule in such situations is -- ask. Check with her and find out if she is up to attending the baby shower. Don't just send an invitation in the mail. On the other hand, don't presume that she can't come and not call her at all. If she's close to the mom-to-be, she may well want to come. Or at least, she may send her good wishes and a gift.
But if she tells you that she can't make it, accept the situation with grace. Never hold it against her in any manner. Even if she said she would come and later backed out. Remember, it is probably one of the most difficult times she's ever had, so be generous and supportive.
Once you've understood these simple baby shower etiquette guidelines, you'll be far more confident about hosting a baby shower. Have fun, and create a special time that will live on in everyone's memories!

How To Get Your Baby into Baby Modeling?

Parents everywhere believe that they have the cutest baby in the world. I know I can probably speak for everyone when I say this. I, too, believe that I have the most adorable baby in the world.

Soon enough friends and family members are telling new proud parents that they should get their baby into modeling since they have the cutest baby in the world. This is when parents begin asking questions about baby modeling. The most common question is, How do I get my baby into modeling?

To answer most parents' main question, I would begin by telling parents that their child needs to be noticed. Parents can submit their child's photos to modeling agencies. Parents can also enter their child into online photo contests, online modeling contests, and traditional beauty pageants for more chances at being noticed by a potential company seeking a baby model.

Most online photo contests are free to enter and there are several baby photo contests online that you can submit your baby's photo to. In addition to gaining valuable exposure and the potential for being noticed, your baby can also win money and prizes! Parents will also have tons of fun in the process. Three top online baby photo contests that I recommend are ContestForMoms.com Free Baby Photo Contest, BabyZone.com Baby Contest, and BabiesOnline.com Baby You Should Be in Pictures Beauty Contest.

Potty Training Your Child: The Five Potty Training Methods

There are many different ways to potty train your toddler. At last count, I had found 35 different books for parents on potty training and I own most of those books. Based on my research and understanding, I break HOW to potty train down into the following five methods:

<li>Infant Potty Training </li>

<li>It's potty time!! - practice until you get it right</li>

<li>The Potty Training in One Day Method </li>

<li>He will go potty when the time is right</li>

<li>The Naked & $75 method</li>

1) The Infant Potty Training Method:

Most used potty training method in underdeveloped nations around the world and probably the least used potty training method in North America.

It basically involves holding the infant over a potty to catch the eliminations.

It basically works by having the mom learn the infant's rhythms and infant learns to recognize physical sensations that precede elimination.

This is very effective when the disposable diaper use is minimal or nonexistent.

Infants can learn to signal when they need to relieve themselves.

PROS of the Infant Potty Training Method :

Promotes parent child bonding

Start early, finish early

Wetting and soiling are not likely to become entrenched habits

Limited use of diapers results in:

<ul>

<li>Cost effective </li>

<li> Prevents diaper rash </li>

<li> Better for the environment </li>

<li> More hygienic </li>

</ul>

CONS of the Infant Potty Training Method:

Time consuming; nearly impossible for working mothers.

Have to stay on top of it and stick with it until child can potty independently.

Accidents and accident clean up

2) It's potty time!! -Practice until you get it right potty training method:

Introduce the potty to your child

Have potty be accessible

And then gradually teach him/her to use it.

This will include:

<ul>

<li> holding regular practice sessions </li>

<li> rewarding child with things such as stickers or candy or whatever works for you child </li>

<li> charting progress </li>

<li> Gradually transitioning from diapers to potty to underwear. </li>

</ul>

PROS of the potty practice method:

This method can easily fit into a today's family's busy schedules

With some planning, some structure can be created around the practice sessions i.e. in the morning and in the evening.

Is done gradually over time.

Very limited accidents, if any.

CONS of the potty practice method:

Sticking to the structure and schedule until the toddler is potty trained

Could take anywhere from a weekend to a few months depending on the child's maturity level, temperament and readiness.

May not learn to initiate him/herself, because parent always initiates.

Keeping the curios toddler interested long enough to sit on the potty and relax, so s/he is able to eliminate.

3) The Potty Training in One Day Method:

Based on two simple concepts:

Best way to learn something is to teach it.

Use a potty training doll to model the appropriate potty training behavior for your child

Behavior is shaped by consequence

Use consequences for action - logical and natural.

Read an excerpt from the <a target="_new" href="http://www.pottytrainingconcepts.com/How-to-potty-train-in-one-day.htm">Parent's Potty Training Guide: How to Potty Train in One Day</a>

PROS of The Potty Training in One Day Method:

Quick - can be done in less than one day to a maximum of 2 weeks

Is a structured method.

Tools are now available.

Made popular by Dr. Phil.

CONS of The Potty Training in One Day Method:

Takes planning and preparation

Is a structured method.

Requires follow through by parents

Made to look easier than it is.

4) He will go potty when the time is right method:

This method is recommended by Dr Terry Brazelton and is also adopted by the American Academy of Pediatrics.

This is probably the most used method in North America .

The premise of the method is that since potty training is a developmental milestone in your child's life (such as walking, talking, eating etc), your task as the parent is to introduce the potty and all the related tasks to your child.

Then when your child is ready, s/he will decide to use the potty and in effect will train themselves.

PROS of this method:

Very easy to fit into our busy lifestyle

Very little preparation required on the part of the parent.

Does not require a large time commitment or consistency from parent; therefore ideal for working parents

Great in concept, but not working well in reality - especially in a society where we are so dependent on the disposable diaper.

CONS of this method:

Could take anywhere between 1-6 months or longer in many cases.

Child may quite old before s/he is ready. The average age for potty training is going up every year.

Wetting and soiling can become entrenched habits for children.

5) The Naked & $75 method

Children 24 to 30 months of age

Parents spend three to five consecutive days on the training.

The child is allowed to be naked all day, with a potty available at all times.

It is important to note that experts disagree with Rosemond's approach.

By the way, the $75 is for the inevitable carpet cleaning.

PROS of the Naked & $75 method:

Simple, easy and inexpensive

Quick - 3-5 days

CONS of the Naked & $75 method:

Not supported by experts

What Foods Should I Avoid While Breastfeeding?

Women in our culture are sometimes advised to avoid spicy or "gassy" foods when nursing. Or they are told that chocolate, citrus, carbonated beverages or dairy causes problems in all nursing babies.

As a breastfeeding educator, I often see women warning other Moms that they need to avoid certain foods while breastfeeding. There are also websites that give unproven breastfeeding advice that claim that women must eat a certain kind of diet in order to make quality milk for her baby. So what is the truth?

Does a nursing Mom need to restrict her diet? Are there foods that a Mom should avoid while breastfeeding?

Generally speaking, a nursing Mom does NOT need to restrict her diet.

Obviously, drinking heavily or excessive caffeine consumption (meaning several cups of coffee a day) is a no-no, but other than that, there is no reason for a breastfeeding Mother to assume that she needs to avoid any foods.

So called "gassy" foods do not affect the nursing infant because the undigested carbs that cause gas in Mom do not pass into breastmilk. It is literally impossible for "gassy" foods to cause gas in babies except in the rare case of an infant being allergic to one of these foods.

Interestingly, according to the La Leche League (considered the world's foremost authority on breastfeeding) website, "In Italy, mothers are often told not to eat garlic, cauliflower, lentils, and red peppers. In India most mothers eat all these things and breastfeed very happily. Actually, in parts of India they believe that garlic helps a mother to breastfeed successfully!"

There are even a couple of studies that showed that babies nursed longer and with more vigor when their Moms ate garlic.

The advice given to a nursing Mom varies according to local culture and the popular "old wive's tales". Women all over the world eating a wide variety of foods produce good quality milk and have thriving babies. There is not a shred of evidence that supports the idea that eating a special diet helps make breastmilk "richer".

Consequently, there is no one food that all breastfeeding Moms should avoid. Breastfeeding women should eat a variety of healthy foods, just as they did while they were pregnant.

The only exception would be if your baby has food allergies/sensitivies, which is rare but not unheard of. If your family has a strong history of allergy to a specific food (such as peanuts), you might consider avoiding that food while nursing and during pregnancy.

Enjoy nursing your baby!

Dozens of Baby Shower Themes

Choosing baby shower themes is the first step in planning a baby shower. Or, you may choose not to have a theme at all. However, having a theme for your baby shower should make the party entertaining, fun, and a memorable experience.

Before picking a shower theme, decide on what your baby shower guests would find enjoyable. Put yourself in their shoes and think about what you would want to do if you were the baby shower guests. Themes for your baby shower are time savers by providing a focus on the baby shower party.

The theme you decide on will determine everything else about the baby shower. The location, whom to invite, what kind of baby shower decorations, games, food and beverages.

You also need to determine if the baby shower will be before the baby arrives or after.

One of the themes that the Ladies would like would be a tea theme party. There are tea gift baskets that would work well with a tea theme party. Not only can Gift Baskets provide the theme for the baby shower, they can double as a centerpiece for your table decorations. With so many themed gift baskets available, you will be able to use a gift basket for almost any baby shower theme.
