Breastfeeding A Baby
Breastfeeding Your Baby.. Everyone tells you that breastfeeding is best - but why? <ul> <li>It contains all the nutrients baby will need.</li> <li>Breast milk contains antibodies which help baby to fight infections.</li> <li>It is more digestible, so baby is less likely to suffer from diarrhea or other stomach upsets.</li> </ul> Breastfeeding is good for mom too. <ul> <li>It burns off about 500 calories a day by using your body's fat which was put on to help you breastfeed.</li> <li>Breastfeeding triggers the retraction of the womb.</li> </ul> It's also free! When you think of how much diapers are going to cost, don't turn down a freebie! How Do I Do It? Your baby is born with a 'sucking reflex' which is especially strong in the first few minutes of life. <li>Hold baby with her tummy towards you and with her body in a straight line. Brush your nipple against against her lips to encourage her to open her mouth.</li> <li>Make sure she takes the areola in her mouth as well as the nipple otherwise the milk won't flow.</li> <li>Your breast holds two types of milk: foremilk which is thinner and quenches her thirst, and hind milk which is thicker and helps her to put on weight.</li> <li>Let her feed for as long as she wants. If you think she has finished but she has not released the breast (maybe she's fallen asleep), gently push your little finger into the corner of her mouth to break the suction.</li> <li>At the next feed, offer the other breast first.</li> Problems <ul> <li> Engorgement - Most common 3 or 4 days after birth. Your breasts overfill with milk, making them feel heavy and hard. Your milk production will probably settle down after a few days; try expressing a little milk before feeds.</li> <li> Blocked duct - maybe caused by engorgement; try offering the affected breast first when baby's sucking is strongest - this may clear the blockage. Keep your nipples clean and wear a well-fitting bra.</li> <li> Sore nipple - Can be caused by baby incorrectly latching on. Try rubbing milk on the nipple after a feed.</li> </ul> ****************************************************************<br> Author: Tony Luck who runs a site with advice for moms-to-be and new moms. Potty Training in One Day - Can You Really Potty Train in a Day? What Does It Mean?
Sounds great ? doesn't it? Or does it sound too good to be true? It all comes down to perspective and expectations. If these words evoke the idea of a magic pill image in your mind ? i.e. all I have to do is spend some money here and boom, my child will be potty trained in one day ? that's it ? s/he will go from diapers/pull-ups to potty training pants and will not have accidents and we will all live happily ever after. Well, a magic pill it is not!! It will take effort and energy on your part and yes, you will have to clean up accidents. We all learn from our mistakes and your child will not be any different. It is however a proven method that has successfully worked for many parents. The one day is the "Big Day" (see Figure 1 below). This is the day when the actual potty training is done and your child will give up diapers forever and start using "big kid" potty training pants. PREPARATION & PLANNING===>"THE BIG DAY"===>THE FOLLOW UP Figure 1: The Potty Training in One Day Process - modified for this article (The preparation & planning can take from 1 hour to 2 week or more, depending on your and your child's readiness. The "Big Day" is the day you potty train your child - and it take anywhere from an hour to the whole day. The follow-up can take anywhere from 0-2 weeks depending on your child.) However, as many other things in life, in order for you to have a pleasant and successful "Big Day" you will have to spend some time preparing and planning for this day. The planning and preparation could take anywhere from one hour to a few weeks depending on how ready you and your child are. The time required for the follow-up after the "Big Day" really depends on your child. Some children do not require any follow-up, but others may require more. So, what is Potty Training in One Day? It is a proven method to potty train your child; Your child will give up diapers on this day and will learn to pee on the potty and will also learn what is expected of him/her as far as going to the potty goes. You on the other hand; will have to expend some time, effort and energy before this day by getting all the supplies together and then preparing your child and yourself for this day (you are already doing this by reading this article!!). You will have to mentally and physically get ready to handle potty accidents and clean ups from these potty accidents. After the big day, you will also have to clean up more potty accidents and follow up with your child and make sure that s/he is clear on what you expect from him/her. Most people who choose to use this method are surprised by how quickly their child learns and that the potty accidents are limited to a few days. Most children will be accident free in one week, however, you have the ones that never have accidents, and then you have the ones that will have accidents for a couple of weeks. Stick with it and your child will be accident free in two weeks or less!! No more diapers or pull-ups!! Copyright 2004-2005. Potty Training Concepts. All Rights Reserved. White Noise and 10 other Soothing Sounds for Calming a Colicky Infant
The crying ? oh, the crying. A colicky baby can really drive you to the edge. Failed attempts to soothe her crying may leave you wondering if you are cut out to be a parent after all. But, don't worry, you are. You just need to arm yourself with some tools to battle each colic-crying outburst. But, first, let's define why your colic baby cries. The most popular theory from scientists lately is an underdeveloped and immature nervous system. I know all women who have given birth can attest to the fact that a baby has a big head. Right? Wrong. Actually, a baby's head isn't big enough to house a brain that is mature enough to have all the survival tools a human infant needs. Their brain is only the size of an apple. The birth canal cannot handle a bigger head (thank God). So, when a baby is born, the only inherent survival skills are sneezing, sucking, swallowing and?.CRYING! Most babies (80%, that is) are capable of crying for a reason, and then calming themselves down. These are usually what I call "the good sleepers" or "easy babies". They are awake for awhile to learn and accept stimuli. Then they sleep to recover and awake to take in more stimuli. Unfortunately, a colicky baby is usually NOT a "good sleeper" or an "easy baby". They are high-maintenance. Their nervous system is overloaded with all the sights and sounds of a new world. And by about dinner time, they've had it. The crying begins. Once they start crying, they lack the mechanism to calm themselves down. In my experience, most mothers with colicky infants tell the same story. Their baby fights going to sleep. They won't take a nap. They won't stay asleep once they do finally go to sleep. These poor babies never take the time to recover from all the stimuli they have taken in over the course of a day. So this is where you, as a parent, step in. Reduce the environmental stimuli and recreate the feeling your baby had while in the womb. Remember, in the womb, your baby was packed in tightly. It was dark. It was warm. And the prominent sound she heard was the "whoosh" of blood flowing through the placenta. This "whoosh" is a little louder than the noise of a vacuum cleaner running. However, there are other items you might have around the house that can lull your over stimulated colic baby to sleep. Most babies can be soothed by rhythmic, monotonous, low-pitched, humming sound that repeats at 60-70 pulses per minute. Here are 10 such items for you to try: 1.A shower running<br> 2.A fan<br> 3.A running dishwasher<br> 4.A running washing machine<br> 5.A very loud, ticking clock<br> 6.A bathroom fan turned on with the light off<br> 7.A metronome set a 60 beats per minute<br> 8.A radio tuned to static<br> 9.A tv tuned to static<br> 10.Smooth jazz or easy listening stations While listening to these rhythmic sounds, it is best to lower the lights, and make your baby comfortable. Remember, we are trying to recreate the feeling of being in the womb. Finally, it is true what you read. Baby colic does eventually come to an end. As your baby grows, and their brains increase in size, all of the circuits mature and they learn the survival tools necessary to cope. It only takes about three to six months. In the meantime, when you feel a crying outburst about to happen, turn off the lights?and turn on all your household appliances. Just kidding! Cherie L. Baby Bedding Wants Vs. Bedding Baby Needs
If you walk into any baby store or online baby site you will find a multitude of styles and designs of baby bedding available. There is something for every nursery d?cor ever thought of by a new mother. If it's animals you want, there's everything from apes to zebras. If you want an angel motif, there are a hundred styles of angels. If you want nursery rhymes, just pick one and you will find a matching motif. What about cartoon or Disney characters? You can find anything and everything when it comes to baby bedding. You will also find all of the pieces you want such as comforters, bumpers, dust ruffles, pillows and more. They are all matched and some of are the most luxurious you can find. So, now you see all this stuff and are tempted to buy. The cute patterns are obviously for the parents to enjoy because the baby doesn't know the difference but what does the baby actually "need"? That's a whole different story. If you are considering a bumper for the crib, this is a strip of padded cloth that is pretty or cute, but they are used to keep the baby from hitting their head against the bars of the crib. Some think bumpers will add to the risk of suffocation by pressing their face against the bumper. If the bumper is tightly fitted against the drib the possibilities of that happening are much less. Make sure all of the ribbons and ties are short and to the outside of the crib so there are no chances of getting entangled. Bottom sheets are sized for the crib with elastic corners and should fit snugly against the crib mattress. If the fit is correct they won't pop off and this also lessens the chance of suffocation. I would recommend leaving the top sheet at the store unless it comes as a set. Your baby only needs light blankets in the beginning and it is best if they are cotton. They also don't need more covers or warmth than we do. We all know diapers leak at night so sheet protectors are a wonderful idea for the busy mom. A sheet protector is a piece of cloth with cotton on one side and waterproof on the other. If there is leakage at night, just pull one sheet protector off and put another one on. This will save you on laundry and time. You can do the same thing between two fitted sheets. Put the protector between the two so it protects the bottom sheet and the top one is easily peeled off if there is an accident. If you like, try the new heavier pajamas for baby so they will stay warm without kicking covers off. You only need a few outfits in the beginning. If you want perfectly white sheets, don't get too excited because colored would be best if you are trying to camouflage the inevitable staining that will happen. If you even think about buying a pillow, stop. There is no need for one for the baby. They aren't safe, your baby can suffocate and they can't really lift their heads enough to use one. It is found that babies sleep better when flat. In the early months babies will be constantly interrupted because their patterns are not yet established. It takes time for them to sleep without these interruptions and to fall back to sleep easily and quickly. When if comes to helping your baby sleep with the choice of baby bedding, consider safety to be the only true criteria. It doesn't matter how cute the bedding set is if it doesn't fit right or isn't safe. Baby Car Seat Glossary Guide
To the uninitiated parent, buying a car seat for your child can seem technical at best. There are a dozen terms designers and retail stores use to describe car seats, their various accessories and features. Below you'll find some handy tips for sorting through the riff raff and deciding what features and accessories you really need for your carseat. Key Terms Here are some key terms you should familiarize yourself with before shopping for your child's first carseat. LATCH ? This stands for 'lower anchors and tethers for children.' Now what the heck is that you ask? Most vehicles built after 2002 have standard hardware in the seats that help attach the carseat more easily to the car. A LATCH system replaces a seatbelt for fastening the carseat into your car. The LATCH system is beneficial because it not only makes installing a carseat easy, but it also prevents the seat from slipping out of place over time. Don't worry if your car doesn't have a LATCH system. You can still install almost any car seat using the seatbelt only. Some modern car seats built after 2002 are especially designed to accommodate LATCH systems, but you can still install these using a standard belt as well. Convertible Car Seat ? This is a seat that can accommodate an infant in a rear facing position or an older child in a forward facing position. Some convertible seats also act as a booster when your child is almost old enough to ride using a standard seat belt. Rear Facing ? Rear facing simply refers to car seats that are designed to face the rear rather than the front of your car. All infants less than one year old and under 20 pounds must ride in a rear facing car seat. All infant carriers are rear facing, meaning they are designed to sit in the rear of your car. Convertible car seats have the option of being rear facing or forward facing. Forward Facing ? Forward Facing only car seats are those designed for children over 1 year of age up to about 3 or 4 years of age. Convertible car seats provide the option of being forward facing once your child is old enough to move out of the rear facing position. Booster Seat ? Most children are not large enough to use a standard seat belt until they are about 80 pounds. Your child may be 5 or more before they can sit in a car using an adult seat safely. A booster seat helps your child sit safely in the car and use a standard seat belt safely until they are big enough to do without one. You can buy a separate booster seat or a convertible car seat that changes to a booster seat. 5-point Harness ? A 5-point harness is a safety restraint belt that touches the base of the carseat in five places. The belt has two points located over your child's shoulders, one over each of your child's hips and one between your child's legs. This safety harness is considered one of the safest. 3-point Harness ? A 3-point harness includes safety straps that come down over your baby's head and then snap into position. T-shield ? This is a form of harness that looks like a "T" that snaps over your babies head into position. It looks somewhat like a shield, hence the name. Base ? This is the part of an infant carrier that attaches to your automobile. You can snap the infant carrier or carseat into position once the base is secure, and detach your infant carrier to transport you baby from the car to your destination. Some parents prefer buying multiple bases for two or more cars, that way they don't have to take the entire car seat out when switching cars. Angle or level indicator ? This is a feature on most rear facing or convertible car seats that lets you know whether or not you have positioned the seat correctly. Harness ? This simply refers to the straps or belts used to keep your baby securely fastened in the car seat. Some harnesses come with covers to prevent chaffing of your baby's delicate skin. Leveler ? This is a device like a 'noodle' that can help prevent a car seat from wobbling or leaning too far in one direction or the other. Tether Straps ? These are anchors that attach to your car and the car seat to hold your child's seat safely in place. The Colic Baby
When a baby has colic, the family environment is stressful and many family members may become upset or on edge. This is most often seen in new parents. Some symptoms of colic may be that the baby cries loudly for three hours, the baby has bowel pains or the baby pulls their feet up under themselves and clenches their fists. New parents become alarmed and upset that their new baby may cry for hours, even though they have tried just about everything to comfort the the baby. Causes of Colic There is no known one cause of colic. Doctors have several theories of what causes infant colic. The most popular theory is that the child had ingested air along with either the mother's milk or bottled milk. Drinking too fast or in gulps causes air to enter the baby's stomach which leads to gastrointestinal pain, thus the baby becomes colic. Another theory some believe is that if the baby is breast fed and the mother is eating a lot of gas producing foods such as orange juice, vegetables, like onions and cabbage, apples, plums, spicy food and caffeinated products such as cola, chocolate and tea, the baby will receive the same result through breast milk. A third theory is that infants have an immature nervous system that is unable to cope with all the intense new stimulations of new life events. As the day progresses, the stress overcomes them and they cry for hours. Solutions For a Colic Baby Infant colic is very common in new born children. It is not the result of poor parenting skills. In fact, about 1/3 of all babies experience colic, so having a colic baby is not uncommon. In most cases infant colic will disappear in three months. But what can you do now? How can you reduce colic symptoms? There is no single treatment for a colic baby. Many parents have experienced success trying the following methods: 1. Hold your baby and rock it in your arms. 2. Put your baby in a swing and gently rock it back and fourth. 3. Take the baby for a car ride. 4. Carry the infant in a sling or take it for a carriage ride. 5. Try turning on a fan or vacuum, using them as white noise. 6. Try using a pacifier. 7. Give the baby a warm bath. 8. Try burping the baby. 9. Use Simethicone drops to reduce the baby's gas pains. 10. If you are the mother, and you are breast feeding, vary your diet to see if you are eating some food which produces gas. The baby would receive this food through your breast milk. Summary of Infant Colic Most of the time newborn colic is nothing to worry about. Make sure you go over the possible solutions for a colic baby which are listed above. Ask neighbors and friends. They have often already been through infant colic. Consult your doctor if your baby screams constantly or if the infant colic is accompanied by vomiting, diarrhea, constipation or absence of urine. These symptoms may indicate a more serious problem. If you are new parents, congratulations! James M. Baby Room Decor Tips & Hints
When you plan for a baby room decor, the best thing would be to give attention to detail. Choose the one which would look eye catching to your guests, pleasing to you and comfortable to the baby. A well lit room could be beautiful provided it does not affect or strain the baby's eyes. Moving on first to baby furniture?. Baby furniture consists of items which could make the baby sleep and eat comfortably. An ideal, comfortable crib (which could give it sound sleep), high chairs, night stands (to store baby items in one place), and changing tables make up a furniture set for the baby. The most important item in the furniture and of course the baby room decor is the crib. The crib has to be strong and durable, from a reputed company. It should be free from rough edges or unnecessary protrusions. The paint should not be lead based. Make sure that there are no decorative items which could hurt its head, back or limbs. There are cribs which have a one sided or two sided openings. You will also find cribs which are convertible and portable ones. There are cribs which look like cradles with a gentle rocking motion making your baby have a hearty sleep. The baby room decor should ideally have the color combinations and schemes which could complement or blend with the furniture. The paint should be non toxic. Also spare a thought to get good carpets and interesting wallpapers. You can go for vibrant and vivid wallpapers or you could even choose wallpapers which could fancy your baby's eyes like cartoon characters or animations. To make a baby room decor is a job of pride for every parent. It is like giving the best place in your home for your baby. Not only that, you are decorating it for your baby making it look special and lovely in the best manner possible. If you do not want temporary wall paper which you might have to discard later because your baby might fancy something new sooner or later, you could apply solid color on the walls. You could also use a removable wall paper which you could change as and when you want. You could also inexpensive area rugs on cork or wood floor. Hard floors are less messy, they don't gather allergies or dust, and you can easily replace the area rugs. You could get frames and lamps wherein you could fit pictures which could fancy your baby. You could even put in her/his picture. Get soft toys and dolls which are non toxic. Buy the best night stands where you could put your baby's clothes, diapers and little bottles. The night stand which could have a color which could complement the color of the room should be closer to its bed and the changing table. The changing table's height should be of the right type, neither too or too low. Pay attention to the window as well. A valuable tip in baby room decor for windows would be to keep the curtains that end at the window sill. If the curtains or blinds drop down to the floor, they could be pulled by the baby, especially when it is crawling. Baby room decor is not a tough job at all, all you have to decide is about the baby's safety, comfort and the space required for its movement. Then decorate it in such a way that could put a smile on your baby's face. ? Copyright Randy Wilson, All Rights Reserved. Facts You Should Know About Baby Shower Etiquette
Whether you're hosting a baby shower for the first time or not, chances are you've got some questions regarding the right baby shower etiquette. You want to create a truly special time for the guest of honor without any unintended faux pas. This guide was specially created to help you do exactly that. The real basics <ul> <li>Take the wishes of the mom-to-be into account at every stage. That includes the games, food, invitation list and all other aspects of the baby shower. </li> <li>You can have baby showers either before or after the baby is born. Generally, they're held 1 or 2 months before due date. But they're also held after baby arrives because of medical or other reasons. </li> <li>These days, it is perfectly ok for a close relative or even the couple themselves to host a shower. Those "rules" about only non-relatives hosting a baby shower are quite dated now. </li> <li>Before deciding on the kind of baby shower you plan to have -- girls-only or coed, theme or no theme and so on -- consult mom-to-be and find out what she prefers. </li> <li>Who can be invited? Generally, anyone the mom-to-be feels she should call. She's the best guide here. </li> <li>Do you always need to send written baby shower invitations? It is usually the better choice. With a written invitation, guests have all details at their fingertips and need not rely on memory. Plus, you can (and usually should) include directions on how to get there. </li> <li>At the same time, it is fine to just inform people on the phone. Do tell them well in advance, though. So they have enough time to buy gifts, arrange for a baby sitter, etc. And leave your contact numbers with them so they can reach you easily if they need any clarifications. </li> <li>Can you hold a surprise shower? Sure. It can be a wonderful feeling for the expectant mother. But do consult someone close to her (mother, sister, etc) to know about her likely preferences in all areas. </li> </ul> The devil is in the details Here's additional information on baby shower etiquette that'll help you host a truly great party. <ul> <li>Send out shower invitations at least 3 to 4 weeks in advance. Send them even earlier for out-of-town guests. Request an RSVP by a date 2 weeks before the baby shower. </li> <li>If you're having a coed shower, you might turn the guys off if you send frilly baby pink invites full of baby talk. Stick to attractive, stylish invitations. </li> <li>If you're planning a formal baby shower, avoid totally goofy games. At coed parties (or even at all-girl events), be wary of playing shower games that focus on expectant mom's tummy -- she may not be comfortable with them. Check with her about choices of games and ice-breaker activities. </li> <li>Greet all guests at the door as they walk in, provide them with name tags (if there are many guests) and introduce them to others to get conversations going. </li> <li>Lots of women have very different food preferences when they're pregnant as opposed to at other times. So do check with the guest of honor while finalizing the menu -- yes, every single item! She may have some ideas of her own about what baby shower food she prefers. Avoid foods are not recommended during pregnancy. </li> <li>It's a real hassle for guests to eat a meal balancing their plate on their lap. Good shower etiquette demands that you provide sufficient tables so everyone can enjoy their meals. That way they don't have to worry about whether they're about to spill food on the floor! </li> <li>Don't skimp on quantities of food. Sometimes a lot more may get consumed than you had bargained for! Same holds for baby shower favors, drinks, ice, etc -- having a little extra buys you peace of mind. </li> <li>Register for gifts at only one place. Even if there are reasons like another store being closer to some guests. Else mom-to-be may end up with duplicate gifts she may have to return. And guests will be disappointed if they find that someone else has chosen the same gift they have. </li> <li>While giving gift suggestions, include items at a variety of price points, not just high-ticket items. And do suggest that guests can get together to purchase higher priced items. </li> <li>If there are older siblings, make sure they receive a gift each. They may already be feeling somewhat left out with a new baby on the way, so this is a great idea. </li> <li>Irrespective of whether it's a coed baby shower or not, buy a gift specially for dad. He should feel that he was remembered too. </li> <li>Record who gave each gift. Essential information when the time comes to send thank you cards! Sending thank you cards is essential baby shower etiquette. </li> <li>Hand gifts to mom-to-be for her to open and take it from her once she's done with it. This will save her the hassle of continually getting up and moving about to pick up gifts. </li> <li>Sometimes, some guests may need to leave early. They'll appreciate it if mom-to-be will open presents while everyone is eating. </li> <li>Start the baby shower on time and keep it fairly short. Don't get bogged down in any one segment like games. Be sensitive to mom-to-be's energy level and any signs of fatigue she may show. End the party if she's beginning to feel run down. Walk guests to the door as they leave and be sure to thank them for coming. </li> <li>Don't expect perfection. No party ever is perfect. There's always the unforeseen -- power goes off just as gifts are being opened, you forgot to dust one corner of the room, the pack of baby shower favors you opened just before the party turns out to be a different color than you ordered and so on. You can't control it all. </li> </ul> Special situations You might have a friend or relative who just lost a baby, or is infertile despite all treatments. Should you call her for your baby shower? Attending may be a challenge for her. Being confronted with another's pregnancy may be difficult for her to bear. The rule in such situations is -- ask. Check with her and find out if she is up to attending the baby shower. Don't just send an invitation in the mail. On the other hand, don't presume that she can't come and not call her at all. If she's close to the mom-to-be, she may well want to come. Or at least, she may send her good wishes and a gift. But if she tells you that she can't make it, accept the situation with grace. Never hold it against her in any manner. Even if she said she would come and later backed out. Remember, it is probably one of the most difficult times she's ever had, so be generous and supportive. Once you've understood these simple baby shower etiquette guidelines, you'll be far more confident about hosting a baby shower. Have fun, and create a special time that will live on in everyone's memories! Couples Baby Shower Honors Both Mom and Dad
If having a Couples Baby Shower seems odd to you, consider this: Mom-to-be did not get pregnant on her own. Nor will she likely be raising the baby on her own. So why should she get to celebrate on her own? Dad-to-be plays a very big role in the new baby's life so he should be a part of the baby festivities as well. A couples baby shower (also referred to as coed baby showers) doesn't just include dad-to-be in the honors. It also includes all of the other important men in the new baby's life. Grandfathers, uncles, cousins, and even godfathers will be able to join in a couples baby shower as well. Baby showers normally consist of cutesy decorations and silly games. But when you are having a couples baby shower, you will probably want to make a few adjustments. You still want to have baby decorations since it is a celebration of a baby at your couples baby shower. But you might want to refrain from using frilly decorations and lean more towards fun ones. Cutting out the baby shower games may be a good idea for coed baby showers. Instead, give the male guests some screwdrivers and hammers. Then have them put together gifts such as toys and swings while mom and dad-to-be open the presents together. If this sounds a little too stereotypical for you (me man, you woman, grunt, grunt). Then try playing baby shower games that both the men and women will enjoy at your couples baby shower. Have a contest to see who can drink a beer (or other carbonated beverage) out of a baby bottle the fastest. Set up a large grid ahead of time with the dates of the month when baby is due. You can have guests write their name on the date when they think the baby will be born. The host or hostess can be responsible for sending a prize to the winner after the baby comes. Another good idea for baby shower games for a couples baby shower is Pictionary. Make cards ahead of time with all sorts of baby items on them. Then use them for your home version of the popular game. Surely most of your baby shower guests will be able to draw "rattle". But what about "messy diaper" or "nursing"? Prizes for baby shower games can be anything you can think of, but if you are going to spend money on them, you should try to have something your guests will want to use. Baby shower favors should also be something your guests will use as well as being gender neutral. Some baby shower favor ideas include personalized lollipops or candy tins, baby themed cookies, or the ever popular bubble gum cigars. If you do not know the sex of the baby yet you can purchase baby shower favors in both pink and blue. Then guests choose the color based on what they think the sex of the baby will be. It might be fun to do a tally at the end of the baby shower just to see how many of the guests think it will be a boy and how many think it will be a girl! Food is also an important part of a couples baby shower. Though appetizers and finger sandwiches may be appropriate for a regular shower you may want some heartier fare for the couples baby shower. By adding more substantial items to your menu you will be catering (so to speak) to your male guests' larger appetites. One suggestion for a nice keepsake for mom and dad-to-be. Videotape wishes and tips for them. Ask willing guests to record a short greeting for the new parents (keeping it proper so Junior can watch it in years to come). Also, don't forget to send the couples baby shower invitations. ? Copyright Randy Wilson, All Rights Reserved. Information on Purchasing Babys Dresser
Babys dresser or baby chest of drawers make up the best part of the baby's nursery furniture collection. They are simple and make the baby's nursery look really cute. The nursery dressers made of wood should compliment the furniture in the room quite handsomely. While purchasing baby dressers you need to take care of some basic things. They will definitely help you make the ideal choice: 1. See that the nursery dresser does not have loose pieces of furniture or toxic materials which your baby could chew. 2. Also, though they look decorative and beautiful the designer knobs and handles that go with the wood could be a problem for toddlers who might get themselves hurt. You just have to see that the furniture that you buy is of the right kind and not having any parts that could appear to harm the child. 3. Go for a baby dresser that does not have handles that protrude out. The dressers that have legs that appear to come away from the body of the dresser could at times trip the baby. 4. Go for a baby chest of drawers that could be made of plastic (non toxic ones) or any other safe material. You can definitely design your nursery by putting in an adequate amount of style and light. Keep an overhead light in a baby's room. A table lamp will also illuminate the nursery brightly and adequately. Just take care that the cord and see that the lamp is out of the reach of the baby. Choose what kind of light is tolerable and suited to the child without straining its eyes. Nursery lighting is something which will beautify your nursery dressers, but you shouldn't use halogen lights. If they are kept upright, there is a chance of them getting toppled or knocked over, which is not good for the child. Again it is a subjective opinion but consider your baby's safety as important. I had gone to my friend Nancy's home where she had just bought a baby dresser that was nothing short of incredible. The baby was smiling sweetly and looked in high spirits. It was as if the baby wanted to be in the nursery dressers. It was as if it was telling me, "Would you like to be as comfy as me?" Nancy's baby dressers are made of plastic with a wooden finish or coating. It compliments well with the furniture in Nancy's room. The light for the nursery is dim, just about the correct range falling over the baby's crib without looking overtly gaudy. She has made a great choice regarding the baby's chest of drawers and baby dressers. ? Copyright Randy Wilson, All Rights Reserved. Baby Eating Habits ? Which Approach Do You Take
One of the first decisions we make is if we breast feed or bottle feed our baby. This will be an emotional topic which ever option you choose. Nutrition is not just about preparing and serving food its much more complex and our own childhood experiences will have a great influence on this. Most parents will feel that the more their child eats the better. They feel that this is a reflection on their parenting and the more the child eats the more successful the parent. A child whose diet consists of dry cereal and juice will leave their parent feeling frustrated and embaressed, these emotions will not go unnoticed by the child and will have a knock on effect. In the case of a faddy eater this may cause the situation to get worse. Faddy eating is a normal stage in your childs development. A basic fact is that most children will go through a stage of faddy eating. This usually occurs during the toddler years when they go through a stage of being a bit obsessive about most things in their life. Most children go through an obsessive stage when they will only wear clothes of a ertain color or they will only eat one type of food. This is a very normal stage and will soon pass as long as the parent does not fall into the trap of focusing too much on the problem. The best approach to faddy eating is to stay calm, the chances of your child starving to death is very slim. As long as the child is drinking a lot of fluids and eating some food during the day he should be okay. Make sure that your child is getting the appropriate amount of vitamins and minerals, you can do this by putting a vitamin and mineral supplement into his drink, your local pharmasist can recommed one to suit your child. Most children will grow out of this phase, and for those who continue the high stress level of a parent will not help with the situation. All experts advise to keep all stress and arguments over food to a minimum. The more you focus on this the more you are aggravating the problem. Keep calm and tackle the situation clearly. Some practical tips to help you through this phase are: It is advisable for toddlers to drink one pint of milk per day. Measure up a pint glass of milk and leave this in the refriderator to be drawn from through out the day. A child should not drink more than this as they will fill up on milk leaving no room in the tummy for solid foods through out the day. At meal times don't give your child a drink until they are finished their meal as the fluids will give the sensation of being full and they will eat less food. This should encourage them to eat whats on their plate. The changing of a childs eating pattern will not happen over night. This will take some time and patents. Expect to make gradual progress with this phase. Your child doesn't have to get all its necessary food requirements at meal times. If your child refuses to sit down to a plate of food don't worry too much. A child can get all his food requirements from small nutritious snacks at regular intervals throughout the day. If your child accepts healthy snacks then these will help provide the range of nutrients they need. Don't take your childs eating habits personally. Sometimes a parent will get upset if their child is eating at cr?che or at another parents house. This is not a reflection on you or your cooking. Sometimes a child will eat when they see another child eating, they wil imitate their peers. If you are concerned about the effects these eating habits are having on your childs health, don't hesitate to seek the advice of your doctor. As before it maybe that your child will require a supplement during this period to provide some of the nutrients they are currenty missing out on. All supplements are not the same so make sure to get advice from your pharmacist or family doctor. Benefits of Making Your Own Homemade Baby Food
Making your own homemade baby food will ensure that what your child is eating is fresh, nutritious and free of additives. By making your own baby food, you'll be saving money. Also, you will have total control over what is put into your baby's food. You can therefore take the extra steps to ensure that only high quality foods are selected and used. You will be able to feed your baby according to his or her needs because you will know what foods are best suited for your baby from experience. Making your own baby food also ensures that your baby is exposed to a greater variety of tastes and textures. This will help your baby when making the transition to table foods and also help him or her develop healthy eating habits. See <a target="_new" href="http://www.baby-shop.org.uk/guide/">http://www.baby-shop.org.uk/guide/</a> for a collection of articles on babies and toddlers. Baby Food Preparation Tips 1. As babies are susceptible to digestive upsets, always work with clean hands and use clean cooking utensils, preparation surfaces, pots and pans etc., when making home made baby food. Prepare foods immediately upon removing them from the refrigerator and freeze immediately after cooking any foods you want to store. 2. Steaming vegetables is the best method of preparation. This softens them, makes them easier to chew, and preserves more of the vitamins and minerals than boiling. A steamer basket is cheap and by cooking fruits and vegetables in it, you'll be sure of keeping the nutrients in the food, instead of in the cooking water. 3. To puree your foods, you can use a fork, a food mill or blender. A blender quickly purees almost anything into the finest consistency. When your baby first starts on solids, you'll be pureeing things to a very fine consistency and, as baby gets a little older, you will make foods a little coarser. You may wish to buy a food mill which comes in large and small sizes. It is very handy and inexpensive. The food mill strains most cooked foods to a very smooth consistency, although meats can be a problem as they will have a coarser texture. Remember all the tools you need to make baby food are probably already in your kitchen. 4. You can prepare large amounts of foods at once and freeze them. Take your prepared foods and plop by spoonfuls onto a baking sheet. Freeze the plops right away and then take them off the sheet when they are frozen and put them into plastic bags. You can also freeze the food in plastic "pop out" ice cube trays. Small tupperware jars with lids serve the same purpose and stack easily. Label and date the packages rotate them putting the most recently frozen foods behind the previously frozen ones. Frozen baby foods can be stored for up to two months. 5. When you take frozen foods out for baby, warm the food in a cup placed in a saucepan of boiling water with a lid on. If you use a microwave to thaw or warm baby food, be sure to stir the food well to avoid hot pockets. 6. Cereals are typically the first foods given to a baby because they contain lots of iron. You can prepare your own, by running oatmeal through your blender. Fruits are generally given next. Except for raw, mashed banana, you will need to cook all other fruits till they are soft. 7. Try making your own apple sauce and pear sauce; don't add any sugar, as these fruits are sweet enough on their own. You can also peel peaches, plums and apricots and boil or steam them. 8. Buy and use organic fruits and vegetables. Use fresh and organic vegetables whenever possible in order to provide the best nutrition and flavor for your baby. Your baby deserves pesticide-free foods. Frozen vegetables are better to use than canned. 9. Yogurt, mashed cottage cheese, mashed pumpkin, baked potato, avocado and tofu (oriental soy bean curd) are all popular with babies. One good idea is to blend together cottage cheese, banana and fresh orange juice - delicious! 10. Meats should be added slowly. They can be boiled or broiled, then put in the blender with a little milk and perhaps banana or cream of rice to get the right consistency. Chicken is generally the first meat baby is introduced to and usually goes down fairly well. 11. There is no rush to start your baby on solid foods. Milk is his most important food. Your doctor's recommendations and your own intuition will help you to know when to begin introducing solids to your baby's diet. Introducing solids prepares the baby for the transition to adult food and offers further vitamins and minerals as the baby grows. Always remember to be patient with your baby and allow at least a few days between newly added foods to make sure the baby doesn't suffer any reactions. Helping Your Baby Develop Character
How Can We Help Children Learn about Character? Children learn about strong character when parents and other adults in their daily lives ? set a good example through their own behavior and actions, ? set and communicate high standards and clear expectations, ? coach them on how to be responsible and kind, and ? use literature to reinforce the values of strong character. Set a Good Example We are always teaching our children something by our words and our actions. They learn from seeing. They learn from hearing and from overhearing. They learn from us, from each other, from other adults in the community and by themselves. Children share the values of their parents about the most important things in life. Our priorities and principles and our examples of good behavior can teach our children to take the high road when other roads look tempting. Remember that children do not learn the values that make up strong character simply by being told about them. They learn by seeing the people around them act on and uphold those values in their daily lives. In our daily lives, we can show our children that we respect others. We can show them our compassion and concern when others are suffering, and our own self-discipline, courage and honesty as we make difficult decisions. How we conduct our everyday activities can show our children that we always try to do our best to serve our families, communities and country. The way that we view money and material goods also can mold our children's character. If we see our self-worth and the worth of others in terms of cars, homes, furniture, nice clothes and other possessions, our children are likely to develop these attitudes as well. Of course, it is important to meet our children's needs, but it is also important to help them understand the difference between their needs and their wants. The expensive jacket that your child has to have may be OK--if you can afford it. Finally, we need to be consistent in upholding the values we want our children to respect and not present them with conflicting values. We may tell our children that cheating is wrong, for example, yet brag to a neighbor about avoiding paying taxes. We may say that rudeness to others is unacceptable, yet laugh when we see that behavior on a favorite TV show. How to Have the Perfect Baby Boy Invitations
Baby boy invitations are the first thing you'll need to share the good news of the new arrival with all your friends. It's time to celebrate and baby showers are the perfect way to express love and thoughtfulness to the mother and baby to be. Perfect baby boy shower invites are essential to planning successful baby showers for a boy. Consider ordering baby shower invitations online for timesaving convenience. You can find a cute, funny, or sentimental baby boy shower invitation easily. There are many things to consider when designing baby shower invitations for a boy: style, theme, and important baby shower information. You'll want to include details about the mother's preferences, such as nursery colors and decor, and if the mother has any specific needs. For instance, maybe she's inherited a crib from her family, but really needs a stroller. Also, be sure to list where the mother is registered for baby shower gifts, and if she doesn't have a baby registry, encourage her to do so. Baby shower invitations for boys can come in all sorts of styles, ranging from playful to traditional. For a real keepsake, opt for baby shower boy invitations with a photo. Some excellent choices are a picture of the expectant mother, or perhaps the expectant mother and father, a picture of the newborn if the baby shower is planned after the birth, or the newborn and mother. Choose the one that works best for you. Scrapbookking is a popular hobby today, and your baby boy shower invitations will likely be a treasured memory for the family for years to come. Now, what information should you include on the baby boy shower invites? After you have chosen the style for the invitations, you need to add the important details of where and when. Be sure to pick a time and place that is best for the mother. When baby showers take place before the birth, it's best to plan them at least two months in advance. This allows for the occasional unexpected early deliveries and gives the mother time to arrange and organize all of her new things before the heaviest and hardest part of her pregnancy. Remember, mom needs lots of time to rest and adjust to all of the new changes. If the baby shower is taking place after the delivery, you want to plan the baby shower for at least 4-6 weeks after. This gives mother and baby time to adjust to their new routines before being the center of attention at a big event such as the baby shower. Baby showers given after the birth have an advantage because the name and sex of the baby are known for sure. This makes baby shower gift giving more personalized and even simpler for the mother by saving her time, sparing her from needing to make unwanted exchanges. Think of how many baby shower or other type of invitations will be needed in your lifetime! Take out the middleman and do it yourself to add your own unique style and ensure it's done on time and done right the first time. A final tip: proofread thoroughly before the final print of the baby shower invitations for a boy to make sure that all of the information on the invitations is accurate. Names, dates, addresses, and phone numbers need to be spelled correctly. Baby showers are a fun and delightful way to honor your sister, neighbor, co-worker or friend. This is your special gift to them. A baby shower invitation is only the beginning to planning the best baby shower and making the baby shower a memorable occasion for all the participants. ? Baby Room Themes: Fun Ideas Your Baby Will Love
Decorating a nursery for your new baby can be a fun and exciting experience. It will be the first place for your baby to dream, to experience, and to grow. Here are a few things to keep in mind: Location. Calm surroundings are critical to a newborn's development. Avoid room's that are close to a busy street, where there could be more noise. Will the baby's room be on the same floor as your bedroom ? This makes it more convenient to monitor your baby. However, you can always opt for an audio or video monitor. Time to decorate! Choosing a particular theme and design for your baby room depends on how much you want to spend, how much space you have, and whether it's a boy or a girl. To be safe, you can always go for gender-neutral colors such as greens, purples, and reds. Choosing a theme. Now it's time to let your imagination run wild. To get some ideas, visit a few baby stores and check out different styles. They may even have example rooms set up that you can check out. Take a look at the following nursery themes to get a few ideas rolling. Animals. This motif could include kittens, puppies, farm scenes, or teddy bears. This is a common theme that can easily be found in stores. You could purchase everything from the sheet and comforter set to coordinating wall hangings and wall paper. Cartoon / TV Characters. The options are numerous here. Winnie the Pooh, Spiderman, Aladdin, Curious George, Bugs Bunny, Snoopy, and Peter Pan are just a few examples. Noah's Ark. This a popular theme with plenty of designs to choose from. You can accesorize with animal pictures, a nursery lamp, bedding, and even a rocking chair. Dolphins or other underwater scenes. This theme will add a cool, refreshing feeling to your new baby room. The cool colors will also be comforting for you baby. For decorating, you could use sea-related wall hangings, sea shells, a border with waves, or even sea horses. Crayons. Remember how much fun crayons use to be. Introduce your child to a new and creative world with this theme. You could use accents in the shape of hand prints or stencil of your choice. Place these on the walls, window frames, closet door, or even the lamp shade. Looking for the perfect paint. Crayola has come out with paints with their colors made specifically for the baby's room. Whichever design you choose, use inexpensive stain-repellant area rugs that can be easily replaced when you want to update the design. You'll want a room that your child can grow into. Your Baby Nursery - Decorating a Fabulous and Functional Room
Decorating a baby nursery can be one of the most enjoyable tasks that you have before your bundle of joy arrives. There are many baby nursery themes to choose from and narrowing it down to just one may be your most difficult decision. Many parents know the sex of the baby in time to tailor a nursery to a baby girl or baby boy theme. If you don't know the sex of your baby there are many color combos that are gender neutral such as periwinkle and celery green. Or perhaps you would like a neutral theme with beiges and creams. You could choose and all white room with just splashes of color used in the accessories that can be changed to suit your child as it grows. Once you pick your theme and begin the task of decorating your nursery don't forget about these essentials; ? Cribs - Your baby will use the crib for 2 or 3 years but, if you would like to use it for longer, then pick one of the many convertible cribs on the market. These beds go from a crib, to a toddler bed, to a young child's bed, with just a few quick changes. Of course, always buy a crib that is certified as safe. Most cribs on the market today will have that certification. ? Changing tables ? choose a changing table that matches your d?cor but as with cribs safety is important. The table you choose should have safety straps and rails to keep your baby from falling off the table. And of course the changing table should have a nice cushy pad to keep your baby comfortable while changing diapers. ? Storage - determine how much storage you will need. Then pick baby furniture such as armoires, dressers, blanket chests and toy boxes that will blend in with your d?cor. ? Seating ? Of course don't forget Mom (or Dad) and pick a comfortable chair or glider rocker which will be great for those late night feedings or when singing a lullaby to baby. After the theme is picked and the essentials for the room are decided, you can begin to choose the accessories such as rugs, window treatments, wall d?cor, wallpaper and paint. Just remember when decorating your baby nursery keep it fun! This is your chance to do things you wouldn't do in the rest of your house. Start with the essentials and then go for it! Baby Massage: A Cure for Colic
Colic hurts. Any parent who has an affected child will know that there is almost no pain like it ? the physical and vocal response to the problem can be highly tiring and its very difficult to stand by and cope as a parent. It's often tough to ask ? what the hell is going on inside my baby?! When the problem arises, as it's so common and many health visitors expect parents to be aware of the nature of the affliction and how to deal with it. The fact is: NOBODY knows what colic is, it was thought for a time to be a intestinal problem, and related to trapped wind, but the only thing that even the medical profession know about the cause of such pain is that is causes up to three hours of crying a day, for more than three or four days a week. Your baby isn't alone either: 20% of children, males and females, suffer colic as infants; usually when they are but a few months old. Apart from the application of gripewater: a, shall we say, interestingly flavoured product; there was for many, many years no cure for this elusive problem?. Until now? Many parents instinctively rub their children when they are in pain. We all know that, just as we need to massage our limbs when we get cramp, they need physical stimulation so that blood flow and wind movements can be righted. Baby massage allows for intense and structured contact with colic afflicted babies ? and has been accredited to the dissolution problem completely. Flowing from the head to the toes, this specialist form of massage sees babies have full, much needed skin to skin contact with their caregiver; a soothing prospect for those suffering pain. A particularly encouraged technique for parents of colicky babies is the stomach massage, which sees the masseuse rub the babies belly in a gentle, circular motion beneath the rib cage, an action that encourages the correct movement of digested food through the body. Classes teaching baby massage techniques are available worldwide, as many families have now begun to reap the benefits of the special, quiet times massage allows them to spend with their children. The BBC recently ran an article on the enriching quality of the exercise for mothers who have suffered from post-natal depression and their babies, noting that the bonding process can be strengthened by the intimacy of massage. It has also been suggested that the strong bond developed naturally by the exercise can prevent behavioural disorders later in life, and that the muscle stimulation involved can see children sitting, and even walking much sooner. Available at a number of Sure Start centres in the UK, baby massage provides at last a positive solution for parents suffering the effects of a colicky child. Righting sleep patterns and ending infant anxiety, it is perfectly simple, and the perfect solution to a huge number of childhood ailments. Are You Spending Too Much Money on Baby Gear?
Did you waste $57 today? I hope not. Unfortunately, so many new parents pay much more than they have to for baby products, because they don't know the secrets the insiders know. Remember, just because you shop at so-called discount stores doesn't mean you'll get the lowest prices. The same is true for warehouse stores and online auction sites. Even coupons that seem like great deals aren't always a bargain. For example, one online retailer recently offered a promotion where you could buy one board game and get one free. But the games cost twice what they cost at a competitor. So it wasn't really a deal at all. What's a bargain-hunting parent to do? It helps if you can find someone who's done some research for you. The Shopping Mom to the Rescue! In an attempt to do a scientific, apples-to-apples comparison, I recently conducted a price test of six popular baby product web sites. I purchased a basket of common baby products from each site. All of the sites I chose were well-established businesses, with reliable customer service, and a good selection of products. Many offered extra services, like reader reviews, shopping checklists and helpful tips. The sites were: 1. BabyCenter (http://www.babycenter.com) 2. Babies R Us (http://www.babiesrus.com) 3. Baby Universe (http://www.babyuniverse.com) 4. Baby Catalog (http://www.babycatalog.com) 5. Shopping.com (http://www.shopping.com) 6. Target.com (http://www.target.com) Shopping.com isn't a retailer. It's a comparison shopping service. But I included it because it's supposed to be able to find you the best deals online. I wanted to see if it lived up to its promise. The Results Remember the $57 I talked about wasting earlier? That was the difference in total cost between the cheapest site I shopped and the most expensive. A pretty hefty chunk of change, considering my basket had just four items: 1. A Britax Roundabout car seat in Denim (the price can differ depending on the pattern) 2. The First Years On the Go booster seat 3. An Avent newborn starter set 4. A Boppy I used my address in Maryland to calculate shipping and tax. Obviously, the cost to you will vary, depending on where you live. And the Winner Is... Coming in at a lean, mean $255.55: Baby Catalog offered the best deals. And this didn't include the extra discount you get by signing up for their Baby Club of America. Shopping.com came in a close second at $257.34, making it a worthwhile stop for anyone in the market for baby gear. Plus, Shopping.com is integrated with Epinions.com, so you can get product reviews right there. I also liked the fact that Shopping.com calculated the total cost, including shipping and tax, in advance. Baby Universe came in at $263.91. But keep in mind that Baby Universe offers a flat shipping rate of $6.95, no matter how many products you buy. So the more you buy, the better deal this site is. Babies R Us was the most expensive, at $312.97, followed by Target at $300.74, and BabyCenter at $285.06. Interestingly, both Babies R Us and Target are under the Amazon.com umbrella, which means you should always comparison shop among the different stores on the Amazon site. Keep in mind, too, that all of these retailers offer coupons and special deals from time to time. So it always pays to shop around. (c) Stephanie Gallagher. All rights reserved. 13 Donts on Child Safety
For years, we have been taught that 13 is an unlucky number: Don't go up to the 13th floor of a building and don't go out on Friday the 13th, our grandmothers used to say. But 13 is also a sacred number due to its secret knowledge, mystery and tangible powers. This last revelation has been brought masterfully down by a professional who is known for her experience in the study of child safety. Author Debra Smiley Holtzman brings a particular expertise of the number 13 to the pages of "The Safe Baby: A Do-It-Yourself Guide to Home Safety." With this do-it-yourself manual, parents and thinking-to-be parents will learn the essentials of protecting the baby. I took this from the release of the book. Here's Debra Holtzman's List of 13: 1. Balloons: More children have suffocated on uninflated balloons and pieces of balloons than any other type of toy. Balloon related deaths are more common among children ages three and older than among younger children. Keep balloons away from children under eight years of age. 2. Storage chests: Suffocation deaths occur in such places when children crawl inside and cannot escape. The best choice is one without a lid or one with a lightweight, removable one. If a chest closes, make sure it has ventilation holes. 3. Bunkbeds: To prevent entrapment, all spaces between the guardrail and the bed frame and in the head and footboards should be less than three-and- one- half inches and there should be guardrails on both sides. Children under the age of six should never sleep on the top bed. 4. Stuffed toys: Be aware that seams can separate and allow stuffing or plastic pellets to be released, presenting a choking hazard to young children. Check also for small detachable parts, security of eyes, nose and mouth of stuffed toys. 5. Art Supplies: Always look for this label: ASTM D-4236. This label means the product has been reviewed by a toxicologist. If it is necessary, cautionary information will be included with this label. Children under age 12 should never be allowed to use hazardous art materials, which can expose your child to toxic substances, including lead, cadmium, nickel and organic solvents. 6. Garage Door: Watch out for automatic garage doors. If your garage door does not already have one, install a sensor such as an 'electric eye' for the garage door. It signals the door to reverse its motion if anything is in the way. 7. Entertainment Center: Use angle braces or anchors to secure larger furniture-which presents a tipping hazard-to the wall. 8. Baby Walkers: Each year, an average of 2 children die as a result of baby-walker related injuries. Holtzman recommends using a stationary activity center instead. 9. Water faucet: Water with 140 degrees Fahrenheit will produce a third-degree burn on a child in just 3 seconds! Set hot water heaters no higher than 120 degrees Fahrenheit. A lower water temperature will reduce the chance of scald burns. Always check the water temperature before giving a small child a bath. 10. Mouthwash: Many brands contain alcohol. Children are much more sensitive to the toxic effects of alcohol than adults. 11. Window Treatments with hanging cords: Those that were manufactured before 2001 may pose a strangulation risk to small children. Consider replacing them with today's safer products or repairing them. 12. Antifreeze: It has a sweet taste. Children or pets will drink large amounts of it if it is left out in an open container or if it is spilled on your driveway. 13. Plants: As beautiful as they appear, decorative plants may not be safe as you think. Two common household plants that are frequently ingested by children are Dieffenbachia and Philodendron. Both of these plants can cause very serious symptoms. These plants contain oxalates, small crystals that get released into the mouth when the plant is chewed, causing extreme pain and inflammation. A popular Flower Garden plant is the beautiful Oleander. Perfect Baby Shower Hostess Gifts
Picture this; you are invited to a baby shower. How do you show your appreciation for the hostess who had put the whole affair together? By giving her thank you gifts. This is the best way to show a little thanks to the person who put the whole affair together. The demand for gifts for the hostess began when a hostess did an extraordinary job putting the baby shower together. The guests were so happy with the way the baby shower and activities were arranged that they decide to give her a small gift. Now baby showers normally have decorations, food, drinks, and even games with some prizes. The hostess gifts do not have to be very costly. You could pool your resources with others and buy a lovely piece of jewelry as a gift. Every girl loves jewelry. If there are several of you purchasing gifts for the hostess together, she would be at loss for words to thank you. You could give her a lovely little pendant and/or exquisite looking tasteful earrings. If you do not know the hostess that well you could consider getting her a gift certificate. A gift certificate is a great way to show your appreciation. With the fact that she gets her way to decide the gift she wants, she would also enjoy the shopping experience. Some popular types of gift certificates are from book stores, restaurants, spas, beauty salons, and coffee shops. Cook books or entertaining books also make great hostess gifts. You can find a variety of unique and funky cook books. Cook books that are perfect for giving someone who obviously enjoys throwing a party. These types of books make fun gifts and the hostess will surely get a great deal of use from it. Chocolates, flowers and wine?simply irresistible:<BR> Some more traditional hostess gifts are things such as chocolates and wine. No doubt these gifts are sweet little tokens of appreciation. The best kinds of chocolates to receive are ones that you would normally never buy yourself. So splurge a little and find a fancy brand of chocolates in a unique box. They make for fantastic gifts for the baby shower hostess. If you are planning on giving wine, you can choose red or white, although red is more common for gifts. Flowers are another traditional gift. You can bring a lovely bouquet with you, or even send them to her house the next day. Another great idea is a beautiful potted plant. This way the hostess can enjoy your gift for much longer than she would cut flowers. Try to find a plant which flowers occasionally, such as an African violet or Christmas cactus. Inexpensive gifts for the hostess:<BR> Candles are an inexpensive yet lovely idea for hostess gifts for your baby shower. These gifts will find use in almost anyone's home. Aromatherapy candles are enjoying a great deal of popularity these days. You can include a bubble bath and body lotion in the same scent. This makes for a great gift basket that any hostess is sure to enjoy. There are many different types of gifts for your hostess. They all make your appreciation known. The hostess of a baby shower has probably spent many hours just making sure everything is perfect for the new mom and the guests. It is no small task to undertake a party. Especially, when well over 20 people can sometimes be in attendance. The hostess deserves her moment of glory:<BR> The hostess and all she has done are often forgotten. Why not show her how much you have enjoyed yourself and appreciate all her hard work by giving her a hostess gift? You don't have to spend large amounts of money to purchase any of the aforementioned gifts. Some other quick ideas include picture frames, journals, guest books, and gourmet food baskets. If you know the hostess well, use your imagination and find something unique that she will enjoy. Please keep in mind that if there is more than one person hosting a baby shower, then you have to bring something for all of them or none of them. You could also have the baby shower at one of the hostess's house. That doesn't mean the others sharing the hosting duties have done less work. So the baby shower gifts have to be given to each of the hostesses for the invaluable work done. ? Copyright Randy Wilson, All Rights Reserved. Baby Shower Hosting 101
Are you ready to host the best baby shower ever but don't know where to start? Baby showers are fun, but planning one can be tedious. In this article we'll cover the basics to get you started. So who should host the baby shower? Traditionally, only non-relatives are to host a baby shower -- co-workers, church groups, etc.; however, it has become more common and acceptable for mothers and sisters to host showers too. The important thing is that someone take the initiative to host the shower -- what a wonderful display of caring for a growing family and a special way to help welcome a new life into the world. It is also perfectly acceptable for more than one person to host a baby shower. It can be fun for a group of friends to share the responsibilities and excitement of planning and hosting this special event. When it comes to inviting guests, you likely have some idea of those you want to invite to the shower, but it is always a safe bet to run the guest list by the mom-to-be to ensure you haven't left anyone out. You can invite guests via a phone call or an e-mail (be sure they check their mail regularly!), but the written invitation is still the most preferable way to kick off a shower. You can even find baby shower ecard invitations online. Just do a simple search online and I'm sure you'll find one. No matter what type of invitation you use, be sure to include pertinent information -- whether it regards a theme, a note of where the mom-to-be has registered, a map or written directions to the shower, or any special item you want the guests to bring for the mom. Showers are normally given a month or two before the mom's due date. It's a good idea to give the mom enough time following the shower to shop for items she didn't receive, yet wants to have before the baby arrives. And of course you don't want to hold the shower too close to baby's due date in case he or she makes an early arrival! Baby showers are normally held in the home of the hostess. If desired though, you can certainly host a shower at a church fellowship area, a favorite restaurant, or even at a banquet hall -- it really all depends on what atmosphere you are looking for and how much money you want to spend. If the shower will be held in a restaurant, make reservations at least two weeks prior to the date. At one- week prior, one of the organizers should speak with the manager to confirm the details. The shower should last around one and a half to two hours. Things may wind down early or they may likely continue on as guests chat together. There are many variations on showers, but we have devised a general "schedule" for baby showers. You can add/remove any part and re-order it to your liking. Greet Guests - serve light appetizers After all or almost all guests have arrived, go around the room and have each guest introduce themselves and identify how they know the mother-to-be. Play 2-4 Shower Games. It is good to play games at the beginning as ice-breakers. Remember some guests may not know *anyone* but the mother-to-be. Let everyone go get whatever food may be available and then once everyone has been served, the mother-to-be can begin to open her gifts. Be sure to have someone write down each gift and who it is from. It will make sending thank-you notes a lot easier. People chat and usually leave a few at a time. Make sure the mother-to-be gets to say goodbye to everyone and the hostess thanks the person for attending. If the hostess has shower favors, they should give this to the guest now. Planning a Baby Shower
This article has information for the novice as well as the more experienced. Information is provided pertaining to when to plan the shower, who should give the shower and how to go about planning a baby shower. Also included is some historical background of baby showers for you entertainment. Baby Showers have been a tradition around the world for many years. It is a cheerful celebration for the mom-to-be and the baby shower guests alike. Just like everything around us, even baby showers have changed with the passage of time. Earlier baby showers were more traditional. Present day celebrations include almost anything and everything to suit the baby shower hostess and the guests. In the present time baby showers can take any shape, type or baby shower theme. Baby showers vary from the strictly traditional baby shower, to simply wild and cool baby showers. Gone are the days when baby showers were boring and dry. Now you can celebrate the occasion any way you wish. The main thing is that it entertains everyone included in the baby shower party. A couple of things about baby showers is how to go about planning the shower, and who should throw the baby shower for the mom-to-be. There are hundreds of ways to celebrate the baby shower. As for who can give the baby shower, anyone except the expectant couple. Remember, the baby shower is given to celebrate the expected arrival of the newborn child. So, it is proper for anyone to take the initiative. A relative, close friend, or even a close co-worker should feel perfectly okay about giving a baby shower for the parents-to-be. Also, the shower doesn't neccessarily have to be planned and given by only one person. After all, a baby shower can be a huge undertaking, and having several people participate will help divide up all the work involved. A group of friends or relatives could get together and plan the event. This would be a wonderful display of showing your happiness for the new arrival for the parents-to-be. However, traditional baby shower ethics were somewhat stricter than today. That only non-relatives are to host a baby shower-friends, co-workers, church groups, and even neighbors etc. But times have changed, and it has become more common and acceptable for relatives to host baby showers too. And why not? Everyone has a right to celebrate the occasion. When it comes to close relatives they are supposed to support the couple. Not only this, but a baby shower is also an opportunity to pamper the guest of honor. Once the new baby joins the family, it may take the new parents a considerable amount of time, money and effort to indulge in greeting and partying with the baby shower guests. So, instead of burdening them further with more responsibilities. Why not treat them to something special? ? Potty Training At Daycare and Preschool
With 61% of children between the ages of birth and 6 years in daycare, it's important that parents work closely with their child's care provider while potty training. When you child is ready for potty training, the right potty training guidance and supplies can make all the difference. <b>Be Sure Your Child Is Ready</b> ? Before you begin potty training, make sure your child is ready. Your child should show the following signs of potty training readiness: ? Expresses an interest in the potty <br> ? Express the need to go potty (verbally or through body language)<br> ? Able to dress and undress<br> ? Uncomfortable in wet diapers <br> ? Stays dry for two hours<br> ? Imitates family members<br> ? Interested in big kid underwear <br> ? Has regular bowel movements <b>Introduce Potty Training</b> - If your child is in daycare, he or she will probably notice that there are other children around who wear cotton underwear and use the potty. This kind of light peer pressure can motivate your child to want to use the potty. Start introducing the idea by watching a potty training book or video together. Be sure and tell your child's daycare provider that you are beginning the potty training process. You child's daycare provider can help by watching for signs of potty training readiness and answering questions from your child. <b>Discuss the Plan</b> - When you begin potty training your child, discuss your plan with your child's daycare worker. He or she has probably potty trained many children and may have some useful tips and tricks. Make sure your potty training methods are similar. <b>Set Potty Training Rules</b> - Work together to set some basic potty training guidelines. For example, agree that your child will not be punished for accidents and that you'll give stickers as rewards for using the potty. The potty training process will be easier for your child if both you and the child care worker are providing the same potty training guidance. <b>Progress Reports</b> - Speak with the childcare provider often to exchange progress reports. Both of you need to be aware of any successes or potential problems. If the daycare worker tells you that your child used the potty earlier that day, be sure and tell your child that that you heard about his or her success and that you are proud of him or her. A Special Formula for Baby!
Choosing to breastfeed the baby is one of the most important decisions a mother can make. Usually that decision was made even before the baby was conceived. There may be times when lack of support, knowledge and different priorities have led to bottle feeding. My goal is not to tell a new mother all the scary stuff in formula, but to discuss the reasons why a mother may be choosing not to breastfeed. Possibly, with discussing these reasons she may realize the benefits of breastfeeding and seek out the necessary support and education for the sake of her health and most importantly the infant's. REASONS WHY WOMEN DON'T BREASTFEED: 1) Family Tradition: Personally, my mother never breastfed, nor her own mother. Breastfeeding was something that was not talked about in my family as a natural and normal way to feed the baby. It is hard to breastfeed when the concept is foreign. 2) Not Knowing the Effects of Artificial Baby Milk: My son was switched to several formulas due to the projectile vomiting. We finally found a soy based formula that would end the projectile vomiting yet changing his clothes many times throughout the day due to continual vomiting became the norm. I had not put the notion together that if I was breastfeeding the vomiting would stop. When an infant throws up continually on artificial baby milk, it is a reaction to the harsh chemicals that are used to keep it fresh as well as the unnatural and unbalanced ingredients. 3) A Mother's Priorities: A mother may be so overwhelmed that even two hours into the future seems unrealistic. A mother may quit breastfeeding because the infant won't wake up, or her nipples are about to fall off from poor latching, and or her milk hasn't come in. The mom may not be able to handle one more demand and, therefore, will bottle feed. COMMON BREASTFEEDING EXCUSES: ? "It's going to hurt". Unlike labor, pain in breastfeeding is not normal. Seek out professional lactation help for latch and positioning evaluation. ? "I have no milk." You were able to provide nourishment throughout the pregnancy for your baby, but as soon as the baby is born your body decided that the baby is on its own? Only 1% of mothers do not have enough milk for their babies. Correct stimulation makes the milk. ? "The milk doesn't come out." Women will pinch the nipple when looking for milk. The milk is made in the breast not the nipple. ? "I am on pain medications." Most of what is in formula are chemicals. I would be more concerned my infant consumed chemicals than minute amounts of pain medication in breastmilk. ? "The baby doesn't want it." Who would choose to drink a chalk-tasting drink for the rest of the year vs. one that taste like candy? Some babies need to learn this new skill. There may be some circumstances when breastfeeding is not going to work. There are going to be some women who have tried everything to breast feed without the cooperation of the baby. Or there are times when a woman can not devote her time emotionally and physically to breastfeed. Professional breastfeeding help is out there if a mother changes her mind. All babies eventually breastfeed. I would advise anyone not wanting to breastfeed to at least try. You might enjoy it. Since I have bottle fed a child and breastfed other children, I have seen the differences. LISTEN UP: 10 EXCELLENT REASONS TO BREASTFEED ? More sleep for mother since you can breastfeed and sleep at the same time ? Calming for mother ? A more intelligent child; 8-10 points higher I.Q. ? Significantly less doctor visits ? Increased bonding ? Satisfaction of giving your baby the best start in life ? Includes Anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties ? Protects from future health problems ? Parents will save thousands of dollars by not purchasing formula ? Less chance of breast and ovarian cancer in the mother Seek help through Le Leche League, WIC, your nurse, a doula or a Certified Lactation Consultant for more breastfeeding assistance. Julie L. Babys First Days at Home
The moment that you have waited for has finally arrived: the day you bring your newborn baby home from the hospital. Like all other expectant parents you will have spent the last nine months preparing for this day. You will have a baby room full of everything a newborn could possibly want. You will have read book after book on a wide magnitude of baby topics from what to name your baby to when you can expect those first words. You will have walked and paced the length of baby's room, imagining your little bundle sleeping peacefully in her crib. Now the moment has arrived. In the crib lies your sleeping baby and the most exciting adventure of life is about to begin. The first few days home from the hospital are just as important to you as they are to your baby. As new parents you will have gone through an exciting birth that will have left you breathless and exhilarated. During your first days at home it may be wise to limit the amount of visitors that you welcome into your home. You need time to recuperate and settle into the routine that a sleeping, feeding, and often crying baby brings into your life. As a new mother you will need to pay particular attention to the way that you are feeling so that those "baby blues" don't creep up and surprise you unexpectedly. It is normal to feel a bit out of sorts and sad for the first couple of weeks after giving birth. Your body is going through some major physical changes after the birth of your baby. Your hormones will be changing and you likely will be feeling a lack of sleep. You should be patient with yourself, understand that all these feelings are normal, and that in a couple of weeks things will feel better for you. If you find that you are feeling more and more depressed, and find it difficult to care for yourself and your family, you should consult your doctor so that he/she can determine if you are suffering from a condition called postpartum depression. While not serious, postpartum depression can leave a new mother despondent, tired, and subject to emotional swings and loss of appetite. The effects of giving birth, hormone changes and the lifestyle changes of having a newborn (not sleeping, being indoors a lot, responsibilities of caring for a baby) can lead to a bout of the baby blues. Baby blues are usually short lived and go away without treatment. During the first few days at home your family will be adjusting to the additional member of your family. If you have other children at home you may be dealing with feelings of jealousy as the new baby takes center stage. Make sure that you include your other children in the day-to-day activities that are part of the new baby's routine. Let older children help with diaper changing, feeding, and just sitting and holding the new baby if they are old enough to do so. This is your time to adjust to the changes in your life and settle into a comfortable routine...at least for the moment! Tim Robinson's report, <a target="_new" href="http://ebooks.sagedot.com/baby/">"Baby's First Year: What Every New Parent Needs To Know"</a> will make sure you have everything you need to know to provide for your child.
