Tough Time Deciding on a Name for Your Baby?

The conversation went something like this:

"Hey honey, when we get pregnant, how about if we name our baby Jack, if it's a boy?" The husband responded, that no, he indeed did NOT like that name. As time went by, they acquired a cat. They were having a hard time finding a name for the male feline. Finally the husband just said, "You like the name Jack so well, let's give that name to the cat. Because I am NOT having a son named Jack."

So the couple went happily on their way, enjoying the newlywed life and their new cat, Jack.

After a bit of time passed, the happy couple learned they were expecting a bundle of joy to be born later that year. They began the overwhelming task of deciding on names. It'd be easy if the baby was a girl. They agreed upon a girl's name long before they were ever married.

They poured over baby naming books; they shared ideas; they made lists; they tried coming up with a boy's name using this method; then they tried that method. Still nothing. They could not agree on a boy's name.

Thanks to modern technology the couple learned that they were having a baby girl. Their naming problem was solved! They proceeded with the remainder of the pregnancy preparing for the baby girl who already had a name. They even called the baby by her name as the husband read to the pregnant belly.

But then yet another ultrasound revealed that the little girl they had come to know and love was actually a little boy!

The baby was scheduled to make HIS delivery into the world in relatively short time. The parents frantically went back to the tireless task of finding a boy's name they could both agree upon.

One night the husband announced that he liked the name Jack for his son! (This is a true story ladies ? can you even imagine how you'd feel if your husband announced this grand revelation?)

To the wife's dismay she reminded her husband that he was the one who did not like that name; in fact went as far as to declare he would NOT have a son named Jack. She then jogged his memory that they had a cat named Jack. Jack the cat even responded to his name.

You may have guessed the rest of the story. The cat now has a new name. It is rather original. The feline is now known as Kitty Cat (K.C. for short). And they have a beautiful son named Jack.

What's the moral of the story? If you are having a hard time coming up with a perfect name, you just might try the name you've given to the family pet!

Steven is a CEO of Pregnancy Resource Center http://pregnancy.i-right.info. Playing Baby Computer Games ? The New Parent-Child Tradition?

Imagine cuddling up with your small child to look at a picture book together that is interactive, musical, responsive and talks to you?

This is the experience that people are having who are engaged in that relatively new pastime ? playing computer games with babies.

JumpStart's Knowledge Adventure calls it "lapware", Kiddies Games' logo is "Hop on the lap and tap", and Sesame Street's "Baby and Me" opens with an animation of a baby monster hopping onto the lap of a Daddy monster to play the computer. Playing computer games with your baby is being promoted as a fun activity that a child and their caregiver can share together. And rightly so, because whatever the activity, physical, loving closeness is an important ingredient that infants need for healthy intellectual, emotional and physical development.

Reading a bedtime story to a small eager child is a tradition in many homes. As the children get older, this may be replaced by watching TV together. Our parents' families listened to the radio together. Playing on the computer with a small child may become a new type of family tradition. Home computers and internet are making their way into more and more homes. Some parents use the computer in their work and are delighted to share the computer for a fun activity with their kids. Other parents want to make sure their children become computer literate. Well-designed, interactive, educational computer games engage small children as much as the television and are more educational than TV because they incite the child to interact and think, rather than passively watch and listen. These are the reasons for the increasing popularity of toddler computer software. Although a relatively small industry, software for infants has been cited as being a very fast growing industry.

What type of computer software is available for babies, toddlers and preschoolers? There are free games on websites and there are download and CDROM software that you can buy. Most software for this age group is games, but computer story books also exist. Wonderful websites that offer free games of which many are suitable for preschoolers (preschoolers are able to do directed clicking with the mouse) are:

http://www.sesamestreet.org/sesamestreet

http://www.noggin.com

http://www.cbc.ca/kidscbc

http://www.abc.net.au/children/games

http://www.meddybemps.com

Great free sites for babies (whose skills tend to be more limited to banging the keyboard) are:

http://www.kiddiesgames.com

http://www.toddletoons.com

CDROM or download software that you buy is usually better than free internet games. The games are usually superior (more graphics, more music, more involved games for older kids) and the software takes over the entire screen, which is more appropriate for very young children who click anywhere and everywhere on the screen. Some of the well-known producers are:

Reader Rabbit software from http://www.learningcompany.com

JumpStart software from http://www.knowledgeadventure.com

Fisher-Price software from http://www.knowledgeadventure.com

Sesame Street software from http://www.encoresoftware.com or http://www.amazon.com

http://www.babywow.com

Computer game softwares for this age group make conscientious efforts to be suitably educational. To judge their effectiveness for your child, try them out with your child. If your child finds that it's fun, then it's probably educational. For a baby, fun usually means that the game responds in some way to random keyboard presses and mouse clicks, and that the game continues in a positive way even when no input is forthcoming from the baby. A preschooler will need more of a challenge or more educational content, but the game should be designed to be always fun, reactive in a positive way and self-resolving when the child does not get the correct answer. At this age, it is more important that computer games contribute positively to self-esteem, rather than conscientiously correcting incorrect answers about educational concepts that the child will master when they're older anyway. The KiddiesGames.com software is meticulous about adhering to these rules.

What types of skills are learned by playing toddler computer games? Obviously, computer software is not suitable for practicing gross motor or even fine motor skills. However, there are many types of educational concepts that computer games can help a child master, including shapes, sounds, cause and effect, identifying and naming things (such as objects and colors), increasing vocabulary, language concepts, the forms of letters and numbers, counting, pattern recognition, detail observation and word construction. At KiddiesGames, we strive to offer games for small children that are out of the ordinary, such as foreign language exposure and practicing the positions on the telephone for dialing emergency. The reactiveness and interactiveness of computer software is, of course, superior to that of books, and can be superior to that of toys, especially in the area of language. Infant computer games are also being cited as excellent resources for children with special education needs, because such games are simple, happy, brightly-colored, patient, controlled by the child and allow the child to make things happen.

An official recommendation from the American Academy of Pediatrics at http://aappolicy.aappublications.org/cgi/content/full/pediatrics%3B107/2/423 is to "Discourage television viewing for children younger than 2 years, and encourage more interactive activities that will promote proper brain development, such as talking, playing, singing, and reading together." This has been taken as advice to avoid exposing those young children to the computer. However, well-designed infant software actually encourages those great activities of "talking, playing, singing, and reading together". By carrying out the play activities proposed by the computer game, the caregiver is actually prompted with a framework or script for carrying out those "talking, playing, singing, and reading" activities with the child. Experts are now saying that while computer games for infants should not replace toys and blocks and books and should not be used as an electronic babysitter, that they are yet another valid toy resource. For example, a summer 2004 newsletter from the Hawaii State Health Department at http://www.hawaii.gov/health/family-child-health/eis/summer2004 encourages playing with lapware. The emphasis is not on acquiring measurable skills or getting correct answers, but is on open-ended exploration on the part of the child ? which is another way of saying "having fun". Children are programmed to learn and practice what they learned by playing and having fun.

Playing computer games with your small child is not yet a family tradition. However, it is an enjoyable, sharing activity that is becoming more and more popular.

The author of this article, Emma Rath, produces free online and purchasable download baby and preschooler software, available at http://www.kiddiesgames.com.

Babies Born With A Cleft Palate Or Lip

As many as one in 700 babies are born with either a cleft palate or cleft lip. Often these can cause a number of related problems including glue ear, crooked teeth and hearing difficulties. The good news is that almost all babies go on to have successful corrective surgery.

How Clefts Develop
Clefts begin to form at about the 6 weeks gestation and are gaps in the palate, lip or gum. For reasons that are unknown, these parts which should join together do not do so in a small number of developing babies.

The causes are unknown, but some studies have suggested that smoking during pregnancy is linked with the condition. An ultrasound scan when you are 18 weeks pregnant will pick up around half of the cleft lips, but cleft palates are not diagnosed until after the birth.

Feeding Your Baby
Babies born with a cleft palate will often have difficulty sucking. There is a special soft bottle that will help here, ask your pharmacist for details. Babies with a cleft lip are usually able to feed satisfactorily.

Treatment
A cleft lip is usually repaired by surgery within the first three months. A cleft palate is usually operated on at about age 6-9 months. In both cases treatment is effective and babies go on to lead a normal life. However, there is usually some scarring and the shape of baby's nose may be a little irregular.

****************************************************************
Author: Tony and Katy Luck who run a Baby Information Site and personalized gift site.
****************************************************************

To Develop Your Childs Genius - Start with Your Unborn Baby

Research has shown that babies in their mom's womb can hear sounds from the environment, and it is widely believed that the baby is sensitive to their environment - inside and outside of their mother's womb. It is a known fact that the mother's moods and activities can affect the unborn baby (I use the term baby instead of fetus, it is my personal preference.)

It is a good idea for an expectant mother to arrange for a peaceful and happy environment. Luckily, it is quite common for this time of a woman's life to be the most happy time in life. By no means do I want to convey that I recommend for the mother to be inactive. Activity is great (as long as there is no physical condition that dictates otherwise). However, I definitely recommend engaging in activities that bring joy and enjoyment.

I have heard stories from mothers who noticed a significant change in the amount of movement they have felt when a very loud and fast music was played. My mother told me this funny story about the time when she was pregnant with my sister and myself (we are twins). She went to the movies, and a very loud, active music was played. We have become so active in her belly, that she had to get up and leave the theater, it was impossible for her to sit and watch the movie.

It is advisable to listen to quiet, peaceful music. Classical music is beneficial. It is believed that listening to classical music is beneficial for the development of children in general, before they are born and after.

We can take advantage of the fact that the baby can hear us, and talk to the baby often. What would you say to a newborn? We already know that talking to a newborn is very beneficial for it's development. Anything that you would say to a newborn you can say to your unborn baby. You can read it a story, you can sing it a song. You can express your love and feelings. Talk to your baby very lovingly every day.

One thing that an expectant mother can do, and I believe to be very beneficial to an unborn baby, is swimming. This is beneficial to the mother, as well as the baby. The mother will be in excellent physical condition during her pregnancy and for the delivery. Swimming takes some weight off the spine, and gives a much welcome relief to the back and front muscles. (As you know, things weigh differently in the water.) It strengthens the mother's lungs, and increases the amount of oxygen supply to all organs, including, of course, the womb and placenta. Therefore, the baby, too, gets a fresh and increased supply of oxygen. This is beneficial to the general development of the baby, and specifically the baby's brain. Before you start swimming, ask your doctor for permission. Make sure that you are swimming in a safe environment, and that there are other people around.

Everything that is beneficial to the mother, is also beneficial to the baby. Another thing that I believe to be great for mom and baby, is Yoga. There are special Yoga classes for expectant mothers, and if you can - find one that is convenient for you. There are also many Yoga videotapes available. Try to find one that is specifically designed for expectant mothers. Before you start a Yoga program, it is advisable to get an OK from your doctor.

For the last 26 years, Esther Andrews has studied, researched and practiced the ways to develop a child's intelligence. She also served as the principal of the School for Gifted Education. Getting to Know Your Baby: Babys Second Month Guide

Time has flown. Your little bundle of joy has been a part of your home for more than four weeks now. The new dad and mum are now more relaxed, confident, and really enjoy their new responsibilities (at least most of the time). Here are a few pointers on what to expect in baby's second month.

Semblance of order

Baby is no longer attached to mom's breast all the time. A feed every 2-3 hours usually keeps her satisfied.

Spitting of milk after a feed is normal. Make sure you burp your baby after every feed.

Your two month-old baby most probably now sleeps 3-4 hours between nighttime feedings. She has definite waking hours during the day, which means mom and dad too can work out a routine.

She knows you!

In baby's second month, she focuses her eyes better, and can follow an object in an arc about six to eight inches from her face. She does not actually recognize your face, but definitely knows your touch, scent and voice. When you coo to her or talk in gentle soothing tones, she starts to make babbling sounds in response.

She enjoys smiling faces, smiles in return, and has a whole range of facial expressions.

I am a big(ger) girl now!

Baby has lost some of her early reflexes and has more control over her movements now. When placed on her stomach she can lift her head for brief periods. If your baby sucks her fists and fingers, let her enjoy the activity. It is too early to picture your two month-old walking to school with her thumb in her mouth.

Bath time can be playtime for your two-month old baby. Trimming baby's nails is best done after a bath (with tiny scissors/infant nail clippers).

To use or not to use

If you plan to introduce the bottle, baby's second month is the perfect time. Breast may be best. But if you have milk supply issues or have to go back to work, bottle-feeding might be necessary. A combination of both can work well too.

Whether to use a dummy or pacifier is a tough choice to make. Make sure baby's nursing patterns are well established before you do use one.

Hello Doctor

A regular well-baby check-up is scheduled in baby's second month. Your doctor will allay any doubts you have and discuss safety issues like placing baby on her back to sleep, the need for an infant car seat and all the other questions you have.

Your baby will get oral polio drops and some shots this month, most probably a combination of the triple antigen, Influenza and Hepatitis B. These shots usually cause a little fever, which can make some babies cranky. Your doctor will prescribe a fever medication for your baby.

Daddy's girl too!

Dads can involve themselves in every aspect of childcare though they tend to do most things differently. Dad holds baby in his own way, perhaps a little too firmly, but she loves it!

Baby's second month sees her turning from a cute unresponsive newborn into a tiny interactive person. Watch your little bundle of joy grow and learn a host of things along the way.

* About the author *

This article has been provided by ParentingSurvivalGuide.com. Baby Shower Favor Ideas

With so many different aspects of a shower to plan, coming up with a baby shower favor idea is often the last consideration on a long list of planning.

There are several unique, exciting and interesting baby shower favor ideas that will work well for almost any shower. Whether traditional or alternative in nature, the following are popular baby shower favor ideas:

Bath and Body Items

Notepads

Pictures

Gift Certificates

Coupons

Gift Baskets

Designer Candles

Baby Bottles with Candy

No matter what baby shower favor idea you come up with, keep in mind that the majority of your guests are coming with one intention in mind, and that is to spoil and entertain the mom to be. Some important considerations when planning a shower include the food items, cake and games that will be played by visitors.

The mom to be or any friends of the family is likely to take an active interest in your planning efforts. If you are uncertain what favors might be well received, go over the guest list with your mom-to-be and try to get a feel for the personality of the ladies attending. You might find for example that a large majority of the moms that will be attending have children of their own. If this is the case don't hesitate to include helpful childcare or baby items that any mom would be appreciative of.

Some baby shower favor ideas are generated from the party theme itself. For example, if the motif of a shower is a color, such as green, you might consider acquiring some melon, lime or pear flavored hand soaps and lotions (that will of course, be green in color). You might even consider some "gag" gift items as party favors including stickers (which are sure to be well received from the children of guests).

Planning a baby shower requires an investment in time and energy. There is no reason to spend the majority of your planning time attempting to find appropriate party favors. There is a vast selection of products available, and ideas are easily discovered when one takes a moment to consider the shower theme, guests and mom-to-be's expectations.

About The Author

Corporate gift strategist Adriana Copaceanu specializes in helping entrepreneurs increase their referrals through the strategic use of gifts. Infantile Cradle Cap - Symptoms and Treatments

What is cradle cap? What is the cause?

No one really knows why some otherwise healthy infants develop cradle cap while others do not. Some authorities propose the mother, just prior to giving birth, had a hormone "rush" across the placenta and this energizes the scalp of the newborn and over stimulates the baby's oil-producing (seborrheic) glands while not being able to slough off the old cells. This messy crust builds up and it's called cradle cap. What we do know is that it's not caused by poor hygiene or allergies. It's not contagious, and it probably doesn't bother your baby at all, although if it gets severe it might itch.

When this rash occurs on the scalp alone, it's known as cradle cap. Although it may start as scaling and redness of the scalp, it can extend to the face, neck and arm pits too, and when it does, pediatricians call it seborrheic dermatitis (because it occurs where there are the greatest numbers of oil-producing sebaceous glands). Seborrheic dermatitis is a noninfectious skin condition and is a form of eczema that's very common in infants, usually beginning in the first weeks of life and slowly disappearing over a period of weeks or months. Unlike atopic or contact eczema, it's rarely uncomfortable or itchy.

How is it diagnosed?

Cradle cap is diagnosed by physical examination. If it has not improved with simple treatment, other diagnoses should be considered and other tests may be necessary.

How should it be treated?

Generally, cradle cap does not need to be treated as long as it doesn't bother you or the baby. If your child's seborrheic dermatitis is confined to his scalp (and is, therefore, just cradle cap), you can treat it yourself. Don't be afraid to shampoo the hair. In fact, you should wash it (with a mild baby shampoo) more frequently than before. This, along with soft brushing, will help remove the scales.

If frequent shampooing doesn't improve the cradle cap, or if the rash spreads to your baby's face, neck and crease areas, call your pediatrician who will probably suggest a stronger scale-dissolving shampoo and also might prescribe a cortisone cream or lotion. One percent hydrocortisone cream is a commonly used preparation.

The following treatments can also be effective although they may need to be repeated to prevent reoccurrences:

* Rub a little olive oil into the baby's scalp before bedtime. This will allow the oil to soften and loosen the scales. In the morning comb the hair with a fine-tooth comb, or soft brush.

*Rub a small amount of Jojoba Oil into your baby's scalp. The oil will solubilize sebum or excess oily scalp build up and make it easier to brush or comb away.

To learn more about other child health, hygiene and social issues, go to http://www.KidsHygieneAndHealth.com.

Kaaryn Walker is the owner of http://www.KidsHygieneAndHealth.com, offering information, tips and support about childhood hygiene and health related issues. To Invite or not to Invite the Dad to the Shower?

Do you invite dad to the baby shower? As per the old tradition, the baby showers are "ladies only" celebrations and generally the dad did not attend them. However, he would arrive at the end of the baby shower to greet and thank all the baby shower guests and the hostess.

But these days, it's becoming more and more common to include men in the baby showers along with friends, spouses, and relatives. Again it is a personal choice. Only the hostess needs to decide whether you want a traditional "ladies only" shower with lots of "girly talks" and personal pregnancy stories. Or whether you're looking for a more non-traditional baby shower. Nothing is either wrong or right. But rather it is all about everyone enjoying themselves no matter what type of shower you want to host.

If you do plan on inviting the dad-to-be, it would be a good idea to know him better, his personality type, what food he likes, beverages, what his friends are like, availability etc. There are a few men who get pale by the mere thought of being around so many women. Especially knowing this is traditionally an all female event.

If you do decide to invite the father-to-be. Then it would be a kind gesture to also invite several of his male friends. You might also have some nice "manly" type food and beverages to make them more comfortable. After all, it takes a rather daring man to come to what is traditionally an all female event. It would also be a good idea to include some games that men and women both would enjoy.

For many reasons, the couple's shower (where men and women both are invited) is an appropriate way to celebrate a new baby.

First, the new daddy has as much reason to celebrate and to be congratulated as the mom-to-be. Second, daddy may enjoy opening the presents as much as mom, maybe more so. Thirdly, if the baby shower isn't held at their home, mommy will need dad to help load up the presents and drive her home. After all, she hasn't had the baby yet, and will probably be pretty tired by the end of the baby shower.

While this may be a new tradition, some men may actually enjoy the baby shower as much as the women. Although I doubt that most fathers-to-be would ever admit it to anyone, dad has to keep up that "macho" image after all.

It would be a nice touch to include gifts that are special for dad. Even though the gifts are usually gifts for the baby, and the occassional gift for the mom, dad wouldn't mind one or two for himself. Just don't let on that you know that. Let him keep his pride.

Generally, anyone who was invited to the wedding can be invited to the baby shower. Remember, this is a joyous celebration and you should spread joy, blessings and happiness to everyone that has an interest in the family.

? A Special Formula for Baby!

Choosing to breastfeed the baby is one of the most important decisions a mother can make. Usually that decision was made even before the baby was conceived. There may be times when lack of support, knowledge and different priorities have led to bottle feeding. My goal is not to tell a new mother all the scary stuff in formula, but to discuss the reasons why a mother may be choosing not to breastfeed. Possibly, with discussing these reasons she may realize the benefits of breastfeeding and seek out the necessary support and education for the sake of her health and most importantly the infant's.

REASONS WHY WOMEN DON'T BREASTFEED:

1) Family Tradition:

Personally, my mother never breastfed, nor her own mother. Breastfeeding was something that was not talked about in my family as a natural and normal way to feed the baby. It is hard to breastfeed when the concept is foreign.

2) Not Knowing the Effects of Artificial Baby Milk:

My son was switched to several formulas due to the projectile vomiting. We finally found a soy based formula that would end the projectile vomiting yet changing his clothes many times throughout the day due to continual vomiting became the norm. I had not put the notion together that if I was breastfeeding the vomiting would stop. When an infant throws up continually on artificial baby milk, it is a reaction to the harsh chemicals that are used to keep it fresh as well as the unnatural and unbalanced ingredients.

3) A Mother's Priorities:

A mother may be so overwhelmed that even two hours into the future seems unrealistic. A mother may quit breastfeeding because the infant won't wake up, or her nipples are about to fall off from poor latching, and or her milk hasn't come in. The mom may not be able to handle one more demand and, therefore, will bottle feed.

COMMON BREASTFEEDING EXCUSES:

? "It's going to hurt". Unlike labor, pain in breastfeeding is not normal. Seek out professional lactation help for latch and positioning evaluation.

? "I have no milk." You were able to provide nourishment throughout the pregnancy for your baby, but as soon as the baby is born your body decided that the baby is on its own? Only 1% of mothers do not have enough milk for their babies. Correct stimulation makes the milk.

? "The milk doesn't come out." Women will pinch the nipple when looking for milk. The milk is made in the breast not the nipple.

? "I am on pain medications." Most of what is in formula are chemicals. I would be more concerned my infant consumed chemicals than minute amounts of pain medication in breastmilk.

? "The baby doesn't want it." Who would choose to drink a chalk-tasting drink for the rest of the year vs. one that taste like candy? Some babies need to learn this new skill.

There may be some circumstances when breastfeeding is not going to work. There are going to be some women who have tried everything to breast feed without the cooperation of the baby. Or there are times when a woman can not devote her time emotionally and physically to breastfeed. Professional breastfeeding help is out there if a mother changes her mind. All babies eventually breastfeed. I would advise anyone not wanting to breastfeed to at least try. You might enjoy it. Since I have bottle fed a child and breastfed other children, I have seen the differences.

LISTEN UP: 10 EXCELLENT REASONS TO BREASTFEED

? More sleep for mother since you can breastfeed and sleep at the same time

? Calming for mother

? A more intelligent child; 8-10 points higher I.Q.

? Significantly less doctor visits

? Increased bonding

? Satisfaction of giving your baby the best start in life

? Includes Anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties

? Protects from future health problems

? Parents will save thousands of dollars by not purchasing formula

? Less chance of breast and ovarian cancer in the mother

Seek help through Le Leche League, WIC, your nurse, a doula or a Certified Lactation Consultant for more breastfeeding assistance.

Julie L. Planning a Baby Shower? These Tips Make It Stress Free

One of the most pleasant parties to plan has to be the baby shower. The mom-to-be gets so much attention and she can just sit back and enjoy all of the fuss. The key to creating this wonderful event is organization. Here's everything you need to make your upcoming baby shower as festive and memorable as possible!

Consult, Consult, Consult!

Because the parents-to-be may have more than one shower, it's a good idea to consult with the mommy-to-be. Before you send out invitations, sit down with the mom-to-be and ask her what she would like from this event. What is her idea of a fun shower and who she would like to attend? Most people shouldn't be expected to attend several showers for the same parents, so find out what else is being planned. Let her know that you want her to feel comfortable and most of all, to have fun.

What if you are having a surprise shower? Don't let that stop you from consulting! Talk to the dad-to-be to get ideas of a guest list and an appropriate time. You might even want to consult with other friends to be sure that everything works out smoothly. Again, consider the mom-to-be when having a shower. You want her to feel special, have fun, and be comfortable.

After consulting with the mom-to-be, or others, it is time to plan!

The Theme of the Day

This is the fun part ? deciding what you are going to do and how you are going to do it! This can also be the overwhelming part if you have never planned a baby shower before or if you don't feel that you are the creative type. Luckily, you don't' have to have experience or creativity to throw a great baby shower.

Some showers are simply a gathering of family and friends chatting, mom-to-be opening her gifts, and eating yummy food. Other showers are more elaborate with special games. If you are thinking of being more elaborate and having a theme, here are some great ideas to get you started:

Consider inviting couples instead of just the ladies. You can play fun games like who can diaper the baby doll the fastest and make it the men against the women. This shower is great for first-time-dads and helps them feel a part of things as the 'big day' nears.

Does mom-to-be already have everything she needs for baby, but you still want to celebrate this special occasion? Why not throw a Mommy Shower? Instruct guests to bring gifts for mom herself (bath and beauty products, gift certificates, etc). You might also consider a "consumable shower" and have guests bring diapers, wipes, shampoo, and other items that run out!

A recipe shower is a great idea. Instead of a card, ask guests to bring their favorite easy-to-make recipes for mom-to-be to use after the little one arrives. Or go one better and have the guests bring a dish ready to be frozen for the mom-to-be for those days when she is just too worn out to cook!

Here's a fun shower that will help the guests determine what to bring as a gift. In the invitations, assign each guest a random time of day and have them bring an appropriate gift. For example, blankets for naptime. Or assign each guest a different room of the house, like the bathroom, and have them bring an appropriate gift.

Have guests bring something that was a favorite of theirs from their childhood for the new baby. Books, movies, security blanket and etc make great gifts with added special meaning.

Have a birthday party! Get a birthday cake, streamers, party hats, and party games! Can you think of a better way to celebrate a birth?

Once you set a date and make a guest list, and pick your theme, you will need to choose a location. It is perfectly fine to have the shower in your own home, but it can be anywhere with enough space. Depending upon your theme, you may even choose a restaurant or an out of the way tearoom!

As the Date Nears

Now that the big decisions are over, you can take a deep breath. You are almost there! As the shower date approaches, however, you may again feel a bit of stress. Do you have everything? Have all the details been taken care of? Here is a great list to help you know the answers to those questions.

Two To Three Weeks Before The Event:

Prepare and mail invitations with directions to event. Be sure to keep one for the baby book!

Place order for the cake if ordering from a bakery.

Choose and purchase decorations and party favors.

Purchase prizes for games.

One Week Before The Event:

Determine an accurate guest count.

Make follow-up calls, if necessary.

One Day Before The Event:

Purchase food and prepare platters and/or pick up any special food platters ordered.

Purchase beverages.

Make sure camera has film and/or video camera is loaded and has batteries, etc.

Wrap gifts for game winners and review instructions for games.

Clean house and party area.

Day Of The Event

Decorate

Buy any last minute items

Prepare area for gifts

Prepare table for the food

And most importantly ? HAVE FUN!

That's all there is to it! You are now ready to throw a memory-filled baby shower for a special mom-to-be.

Copyright. Learning Activities For Your Baby

Books and Babies - For babies from age 6 weeks to 1 year Sharing books is a way to have fun with your baby and to start him on the road to becoming a reader. What You Need Cardboard or cloth books with large, simple pictures of things with which babies are familiar Lift-the-flap, touch- and-feel, or peek-through play books (For suggestions, see Resources for Children,

What to Do?

Read to your baby for short periods several times a day. Bedtime is always a good time, but you can read at other times as well--while you're in the park, on the bus, or even at the breakfast table (without the food!).

As you read, point out things in the pictures. Name them as you point to them. Give your baby sturdy books to look at, touch, and hold. Allow him to peek through the holes or lift the flaps to discover surprises. Babies soon recognize the faces and voices of those who care for them. As you read to your baby, he will begin to connect books with what he loves most--your voice and closeness.

Continue talking with your older child as you did with your baby. Talking helps him to develop language skills and lets him know that what he says is important.

What to Do

The first activities in the list below work well with younger children. As your child grows older, the later activities let him do more. However, keep doing the first ones as long as he enjoys them.

Talk often with your toddler. When feeding, bathing, and dressing him, ask him to name or find different objects or clothing. Point out colors, sizes, and shapes.

Talk with your child as you read together. Point to pictures and name what is in them. When he is ready, ask him to do the same. Ask him about his favorite parts of the story, and answer his questions about events or characters.

Teach your toddler to be a helper by asking him to find things. As you cook, give him pots and pans or measuring spoons to play with. Ask him what he is doing and answer his questions. ??

Whatever you do together, talk about it with your child.

When you eat meals, take walks, go to the store, or visit the library, talk with him. These and other activities give the two of you a chance to ask and answer questions such as, "Which flowers are red? Which are yellow?" "What else do you see in the garden?"Challenge your child by asking questions that need more than a "yes" or "no" answer.

Listen to your child's questions patiently and answer them just as patiently. If you don't know the answer to a question, have him join you as you look for the answer in a book. He will then see how important books are as sources of information.

Have your child tell you a story. Then ask him questions, explaining that you need to understand better.

When he is able, ask him to help you in the kitchen. He might set the table or decorate a batch of cookies. A first- grader may enjoy helping you follow a simple recipe. Talk about what you're fixing, what you're cooking with, what he likes to eat, and more.

Ask yourself if the TV is on too much. If so, turn it off and talk!

Anil Vij is the creator of the ultimate parenting toolbox, which has helped parents all over the world raise smarter, healthier and happier children ==> http://www.expertsonparenting.com

Sign up for Anil's Experts On Parenting Newsletter - just send a blank email ===> mailto: parentingnews@aweber.com

How to Have the Perfect Baby Boy Invitations

Baby boy invitations are the first thing you'll need to share the good news of the new arrival with all your friends. It's time to celebrate and baby showers are the perfect way to express love and thoughtfulness to the mother and baby to be.

Perfect baby boy shower invites are essential to planning successful baby showers for a boy. Consider ordering baby shower invitations online for timesaving convenience. You can find a cute, funny, or sentimental baby boy shower invitation easily.

There are many things to consider when designing baby shower invitations for a boy: style, theme, and important baby shower information. You'll want to include details about the mother's preferences, such as nursery colors and decor, and if the mother has any specific needs. For instance, maybe she's inherited a crib from her family, but really needs a stroller.

Also, be sure to list where the mother is registered for baby shower gifts, and if she doesn't have a baby registry, encourage her to do so.

Baby shower invitations for boys can come in all sorts of styles, ranging from playful to traditional. For a real keepsake, opt for baby shower boy invitations with a photo. Some excellent choices are a picture of the expectant mother, or perhaps the expectant mother and father, a picture of the newborn if the baby shower is planned after the birth, or the newborn and mother. Choose the one that works best for you. Scrapbookking is a popular hobby today, and your baby boy shower invitations will likely be a treasured memory for the family for years to come.

Now, what information should you include on the baby boy shower invites? After you have chosen the style for the invitations, you need to add the important details of where and when. Be sure to pick a time and place that is best for the mother.

When baby showers take place before the birth, it's best to plan them at least two months in advance. This allows for the occasional unexpected early deliveries and gives the mother time to arrange and organize all of her new things before the heaviest and hardest part of her pregnancy. Remember, mom needs lots of time to rest and adjust to all of the new changes.

If the baby shower is taking place after the delivery, you want to plan the baby shower for at least 4-6 weeks after. This gives mother and baby time to adjust to their new routines before being the center of attention at a big event such as the baby shower. Baby showers given after the birth have an advantage because the name and sex of the baby are known for sure. This makes baby shower gift giving more personalized and even simpler for the mother by saving her time, sparing her from needing to make unwanted exchanges.

Think of how many baby shower or other type of invitations will be needed in your lifetime! Take out the middleman and do it yourself to add your own unique style and ensure it's done on time and done right the first time.

A final tip: proofread thoroughly before the final print of the baby shower invitations for a boy to make sure that all of the information on the invitations is accurate. Names, dates, addresses, and phone numbers need to be spelled correctly.

Baby showers are a fun and delightful way to honor your sister, neighbor, co-worker or friend. This is your special gift to them. A baby shower invitation is only the beginning to planning the best baby shower and making the baby shower a memorable occasion for all the participants.

? Car Seats and Newborn Babies

I remember very clearly the first day we brought our oldest daughter home from the hospital. Lucky for me my husband is a car seat technician, so I had no worries that we had installed our Graco infant carrier correctly. Interestingly, my husband procrastinated installing the seat until the day I was scheduled to go in for my induction (my baby was a week overdue).

I think until that point the idea of having a baby wasn't real. Reality sure struck like a hammer however a few days later, when we packed our bags up and prepared to bring our bundle of joy home. The nurse in the maternity ward was insistent about checking to make sure our baby was nestled safely into her carseat. She took great care to coach me about how to put the baby in the carseat and support her head. She also told me of the steps I should take to make sure the straps weren't too tight and adjusted properly. Of course, she knew of my husbands experience but still walked down to make sure we had installed the car seat properly. She wanted to make sure the seat was in the middle of the backseat.

My husband and I smiled at each other. Once we got in the car however we realized how terrified we were. That was the first time I have ever seen my husband drive 20 miles an hour down the highway back home. Normally the drive was about 25 minutes to the hospital. It probably took us close to an hour to get home that day. Looking back, we are lucky we didn't get into an accident for driving too slow!

Selecting The Perfect Carseat Of course, that was the fun part of the story. Actually finding a car seat was a mindboggling task. As first time parents, everyone and their mother had an opinion about the best type of car seat for us to use. There were loads of fans of the Graco brand (which we finally settled on). I had one friend drag me to Babies R Us and insist I try out an Eddie Bauer model. Still others looked at me and laughed when I told them I wasn't going to buy a travel system that came with a car seat and stroller. Others suggested starting right off the bat with a convertible car seat. And everyone, I mean EVERYONE was positive their opinion was the best.

Eventually we decided to stick with the Graco infant carrier because it was convenient. Of course, we had a porky 8 pound baby that outgrew her seat within 8 months. Actually, technically she probably outgrew it closer to seven. After that we decided to go with a convertible car seat. While many parents suggested starting out with the convertible seat, I am actually glad we did have the infant carrier to start with. For a few months anyway, I started developing enviable biceps from carrying around my large, bouncing baby girl. I sort of missed that once we changed to the convertible.

There are many things to look for when deciding the right carseat. Here is what I learned from my car seat shopping adventures:

You may change your mind midway through. We thought the infant carrier would last us at least a year. As it turns out, we had to shop for another carseat much sooner than expected. If you think you will have a large baby (hint, your size or your partners, or even your mothers history might clue you in) shop for an infant carrier with a higher weight range. Some only carry a baby to 20 pounds, while others go to 22 (and two pounds is a world of difference for a baby).

Keep in mind the advice of others, but remember you know best when it comes to your lifestyle and preferences. You should select the carseat you are most comfortable with, not the one someone insists you buy because they like it.

Consider a convertible seat. They'll last you a lifetime.

Remember your child will continue to need a carseat until they are about 80 pounds. Keep this in mind when investing in a carseat.

Look for a seat with washable and removable fabric. Trust me, your child will dirty the seat before you know it!

Last but not least, try not to get overwhelmed by the many accessories and extra features available. All you really need is a safe seat with a latching belt. Cup holders, toy attachments and other things are secondary to this.

Ant Arthur is a successful freelance writer with 10 years of professional experience providing consumers with informative articles on such topics as Baby Carriers, Baby Slings and Baby Car Seats

Baby Safety & the Family Dog

I remember how wonderful the baby swing in particular, is the moment of peace and tranquility, as well as much needed arm. A recent article (http://www.cnn.com/2005/HEALTH/parenting/02/23/baby.swings.dogs.ap/index.html) addresses concerns about dogs and mechanical swings. It is important to remember that all dogs react differently and supervision is a duty all the time! I saw first hand a range of reactions to the child by different equipment dogs. Some dogs are desperately hunting and capture the movement of the swing, while others seem to find comforting. A man is in the air is not normal to dogs and can be very confusing, even though the swing is based. It is important to know the dog's reactions to various situations and stimuli. Here are some points to consider: 1 Ask your dog likes to chase anything and everything? 2. Does your dog react to the sudden movement? 3. Will surprise easily? 4. Your dog is sensitive to noise? If so, strong, soft or sudden? High or low pitch? Adults with responsibility for supervising a baby must never allow the dog to stay in a room alone with a baby, even for a second! It is a crucial factor in most reports of attacks on dogs and babies. This point should not be taken lightly. If the adult is not for the dog to postpone the baby and make sounds, the dog May be the first to respond and perhaps tend to the child. This is very dangerous as dogs communicate and relate very different when we are only humans. What can parents and caregivers to prevent such incidents? It is best to introduce baby swings and all baby equipment to the family dog before the arrival of the baby. Baby swings have all sorts of gadgets these days! Vibrator, create music and even rotate. It is important to know your dog sensitivity to the individual and to prepare well in advance. Some things to consider with baby swings: 1 Once in motion some dogs find the natural desire of persecution is difficult to control fluctuations around the baby. 2. The noise of the vibration of a device on the swing can have an annoying buzzing of certain dogs. 3. A parody of objects which are intended to be visually stimulating for a child May be attractive for a dog to get. 4. The sounds of music can be irritating to some dogs' sensitive ears. It is important that family dogs learn to behave calmly around all baby equipment prior to use by children. The practice before the baby is home with a doll in the swing. Some sounds and dolls to blink eyes etc. It sounds silly but the fact that the role play and demonstrate the reality of the situation. This allows some time for your dog to safely explore as you teach him how you want it to behave. Positive and rewarding appropriate behavior. Make it a positive experience. Ignore unwanted behavior and teach desired behavior. You do not want the first time your dog sees this new equipment to be when you are really hoping for a baby to sleep! Many dogs learn that the swing is only part of the new furniture and ignore it. It's perfect, but it does not mean it is safe to leave the room when a child resting in the real swing. Upgrading the practice of obedience, and now goes a long way to ease the transition when the baby arrives. Have a plan for situations such as telephone calls. Here are some ideas. 1. Close the door to the child. 2. Take your dog with you. 3. Place a link to his dog in the house to keep close to him or to be used as a burden for furniture for their security. 4. Use a baby gate to be physically up to lock the door of the area when the baby. (Not for those who like the high jump!) 5 Give the dog a great outdoor activity in a secure area. As always, it is never safe to leave a baby and the dog unattended for any reason at any time. Most of all babies experience! Baby Monitor Technology - A Buyers Guide

What is a baby monitor, and why do I need? It is perhaps an obvious question nowadays, but baby monitors are a relatively new innovation. On the most basic level, which gives parents the freedom to keep a constant watch on their cot (bed-side or Moses basket on the page!). A baby who normally monitor consists of a transmitter and receiver. The transmitter is located near the child and the father keeps reseptoren. This allows parents to know immediately if the baby needs peace while doing other things around the house - or perhaps take some needed rest! Types of baby monitors to monitor the babies now fall into three broad categories. He is the traditional audio baby monitors. These warning to parents if the child begins to cry or disrupt or ukomfortabel. Audio / Visual baby monitors take further by allowing parents to watch and listen to their baby. It is a unit of the device with a microphone and a receiver with a television screen and speakers. Finally, there are sensor baby monitors (also known as baby monitors respiratory diseases). These offer peace of mind immediately notified the parents about their babies breathing is significantly unequal or stops completely. Baby Monitors Audio Audio baby monitors are divided into two types: analog and digital. The analog monitors have traditionally been large quantities of interference with other furniture which gave the front of a wireless signal. Although this May always be present when the cheaper analog monitors, most now have more than one channel that lets you choose one that is without interference and implement technologies to reduce outside interference. To ensure an interference transmission and reception is a necessity for a digital monitor baby. Remember that a baby monitor is essentially a radio transmitter and receiver and digital radio (if you have one!) Is higher than normal radio reception. The high-end digital baby monitors use something called DECT technology. This digital technology has come to Walkabout mobile phones and digital wireless technology. DECT supervisors automatically select a channel of 120 channels and often encrypted channels to put an end to any listener. Because the technology of these screens are generally more expensive, but (like Philips Digital Baby Monitor BT and digital monitors), which ensures free-interference and transmission is often useful with several additional features: Audio baby - Things to look for:? The number of channels? Wireless unit parents? The belt clip for portable convenience? Light on the matrix screen that displays the noise level, even if the sound is lost. ? Low battery indicator? Night Light baby in the unit? Thursday routes of transmission facilities - if you can talk to your baby from the parent device. ? Temperature measurement - remember the nursery ideal temperature is around 18C (65F) Audio / Visual Baby Monitors A recent innovation - these screens allow you to see and listen to their baby. This offers obvious advantages, as if the child has left its coverage, or if you sleep in a difficult position, etc. But these baby monitor May also be useful for older children, so you can check if a permit is to play for them even in another room. The range of audio visual baby monitors May be limited by the design of your home. If your house is normal partition (or studies), and the walls in the region will be around 30m event. But if you live in an old house with solid walls in the area has been reduced - especially if the signal must pass through several walls. This provision does not apply when it is directly below or above a crib that only the signal passes through a wood (or plants), and therefore must be perfect. Audiovisual baby - Things to look for:? The night vision - it seems obvious, but some come without it! This is important for the vision of the night. All our audiovisual baby monitors come with night vision. ? The number of channels - helps to find the best channel, but can also enable the camera to add later. ? - If you have a portable fathers of the screen can drain the battery. Some pieces of come out so that if a baby makes noise. Baby Monitors sensor also called respiratory baby monitors these monitors consist of sensitive pads that go under the mattress of the baby. During the first year of life, infants may have irregular breathing patterns or completely stop breathing. These monitors can alert you when your baby is breathing changes due to cold, high fever and disease. The Baby Sense II continues to detect the movement of your baby's movements and breathing, and the amounts of audio and visual alarm in case of movements of breathing stops for more than 20 seconds, or if the rate breathing slows to less than 10 breaths per minute. Remember, a sensor Baby Monitor has been added to a principle of precaution, and that may help safeguard the peace of mind, but must be combined with the main recommendations of the safe sleep (sleeping in the back, not overheat the baby room, smoking around the child). Sensor Baby Monitors - things to look for?
